The Delhi Zoo, or the National Zoological Park in Delhi, is a huge zoo that offers the opportunity to look at and educate yourself and your kids about the different species of animals and the rich fauna.
Where is the Delhi Zoo Located?
The Delhi Zoo is located on Mathura Road near the Old Fort. It can be easily accessed through car, auto or bike. The closest metro station for the zoo is the Khan Market (on Violet Line), Pragati Maidan, Mandi House (Blue Line), and Patel Chowk (Yellow Line).
What are the fees for entry into the zoo?
Adults are charged Rs. 80 per head, and children from 5-12 years are charged RS. 40 and Senior Citizens (above 60 years) are charged Rs. 40 per head.
Foreigners from non-SAARC countries are charged Rs. 400 per person and Rs. 200 for SAARC countries adults.
NOTE: The zoo remains closed on Fridays.
It is usually open from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm.

Facts about the Delhi Zoo
- Indira Gandhi played a major role in the establishment of the zoo.
- Shri N.D. Bachkheti, a forest officer of Uttar Pradesh, was appointed as superintendent on 1st October 1955. This was done as wildlife was managed by the forest department.
- Director of Ceylon Zoological Garden, Colombo, Major Weinmann played a major role in the development of the zoo.
- The Delhi Zoo has open moats that allow visitors to look at the animals from a safe distance but with protection. This also eliminated the use of small cages. This idea was given by Mr. Carl Hagenbeck, owner of the famous Animal Park at Hamburg, West Germany.
- The park was formally inaugurated on 1st November, 1959
- Along with a rich list of fauna, it is also rich in flora and has a variety of tree species.
- You can adopt an animal in the zoo as well.
