Celebrating Arunachal Pradesh Foundation Day: Honoring History, Culture, and Progress of the Land of the Rising Sun

Arunachal Pradesh, India’s north-east state, celebrates its Foundation Day on 20th February every year. It was the day on which Arunachal Pradesh became a Union Territory in 1972 and, later, a full state on 20th February 1987. Arunachal Pradesh also enjoys the tag “Land of the Rising Sun” as it is a land of unimaginable vistas, multiculturalism, and bountiful traditions.

Historical Significance

Before 1972, Arunachal Pradesh was known as North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA) and was administered by the Government of Assam. It was only on 20th January 1972 that the state was elevated to the rank of a Union Territory and also given the name Arunachal Pradesh. It was subsequently given full statehood on 20th February 1987 and became the 24th state of India.
The addition of the distant, unnamed region to the Indian Union was the turning point for the growth of the region. Arunachal Pradesh has grown infrastructurally, educationally, and in connectivity after it was formed as a state.

Cultural and Traditional Heritage

There are 26 large tribes and over 100 sub-tribes in Arunachal Pradesh, every one of which has its own tradition, habit, and festivals. The state’s most celebrated festivals are:

• Losar – Tibetan New Year is celebrated during festival of Monpa tribe.
  
• Solung – Great Adi tribe farmers’ festival.
  
• Dree Festival – Feted by the Apatani tribe to have a harvest in plenty.
• Si-Donyi – Tagin tribe’s festival, praying to nature and gods.
  Handicrafts of bygone era, wood carvings, and lovely handloom wear are what the state is renowned for, as well.

Foundation Day celebrations

Arunachal Pradesh Foundation Day is celebrated every year with utmost fervor. The day is remembered by the state government in the form of cultural functions, parades, and exhibitions of the rich cultural heritage of the state. The performance of the folk dances, music concert, and competitions of traditional games are also arranged on the day in some districts.

In addition to this, the government officials also state achievements and development activities executed for developing the state. The day provides an opportunity to reward the individuals of Arunachal Pradesh for their efforts toward the growth of the state.

The government has also tried to popularize the cause of eco-tourism and marketed to the world the state’s virgin forests, wildlife sanctuaries, and natural splendor, and beckoned the world’s tourists to the state.
