The iconic photo of Pakistan’s surrender in 1971 has been a topic of discussion lately, with many wondering why a Bangladeshi general is missing from the picture. Yunus Sarkar, a Bangladeshi veteran, has been vocal about the absence of Bangladeshi representatives in the surrender ceremony. However, his allegations have been deemed baseless by historians and experts.
The surrender ceremony took place on December 16, 1971, at the Ramna Race Course in Dhaka, where Pakistani General AAK Niazi signed the Instrument of Surrender in front of Indian General Jagjit Singh Aurora. The ceremony was attended by Indian and Pakistani officials, but no Bangladeshi representatives were present.

The reason for the absence of Bangladeshi representatives is rooted in the circumstances surrounding the surrender. The Bangladesh Liberation War was fought between the Pakistani army and the Mukti Bahini, a Bangladeshi nationalist force. India provided significant military support to the Mukti Bahini, which ultimately led to the defeat of the Pakistani army.

In the aftermath of the war, Bangladesh was not yet a fully recognized sovereign state, and its government was still in the process of formation. Therefore, it was not possible for Bangladeshi representatives to be part of the formal surrender ceremony. Despite this, the contribution of the Mukti Bahini and the people of Bangladesh to the war effort is widely acknowledged and celebrated.
