Rohit Sharma Explains Viral ‘Garden’ Dialogue During Crucial Test Match

Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma has finally revealed how he came to utter that now-legendary phrase on the field: “Koi garden mein nahi ghoomega,” meaning “Nobody is going to wander around in the garden.” This statement, which was heard through a stump microphone during the second Test against England in Visakhapatnam in February 2024, instantly went viral and became a topic amongst cricket lovers.

In a recent interview on JioHotstar, Rohit recounted the whole scenario which led to his outburst. He pointed out the lack of urgency amongst his teammates in a vital moment of the match. “It was in Vizag, I saw the over ended and the players were leisurely walking as if they were in a garden. No one was running, there was no urgency in the field,” said Rohit. At the time, India had both spinners operating in tandem, with the match finely balanced.

Rohit stressed that when the game is in dire straits, one must ensure concerted team effort. “The game was hanging by a loose thread; it was an important game; we had to win. I had told the players in the morning that we needed to put in some extra effort but they were having fun in the ground,” he added. He was rather miffed to see his teammates relaxing when every ounce of concentration was required in the situation.

The captain’s comment was not simply an unconsidered response but was in fact a calculated effort to spur the team. “So I watched it for two-three overs and then said that this can’t go on; you can’t play cricket like this. Everybody was just going with the flow and that was irritating me, so I told them not to be like that,” stated Rohit. His intention was driven by a desire to evoke some urgency and commitment among his players.

Shortly after Rohit’s comments, the entire team gained momentum, leading to a shift in energy. India won the match by 106 runs and squared the five-match series at 1-1; a win critical to laying the groundwork for India winning the series 4-1. Rohit was instrumental through his leadership and timely intervention.

Since then, the Garden comment has traveled well beyond that one single game and entered the annals of cricketing history. Teammates and supporters have used it in jest but consider it with utmost reverence. Rohit himself took to heart sharing a post-series picture with the caption, “Garden me ghoomne waale ladke,” a tribute to this bond, experience, and camaraderie built over time in the team.

His transparency and conviction will persistently inspire his teammates and innumerable fans worldwide.
