After Pahalgam Attack, Families Caught in Visa Crackdown Seek Compassion

A number of Pakistani nationals who are returning home have urged the Indian government to re-evaluate its decision to cancel all types of visas granted to Pakistani nationals following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that killed 26 people, the majority of whom were tourists.

Visa Expiry Sparks Mass Departures

Due to the Union government’s decision, the number of Pakistani nationals leaving India through the Attari Border increased significantly on Tuesday, the last day that their medical visas were valid.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Pakistani citizens’ short-term visas were already no longer valid as of Sunday.

Individual Cases: Families Affected and Lives Disrupted

According to Samreen, a Pakistani national at the Attari Border, she arrived in India in September on a 45-day visa and got married there. However, she has to depart the country because she hasn’t received her long-term visa yet.

“In September I arrived here on a 45-day visa, later got married. My long-term visa hasn’t arrived yet and now I’m being asked to leave the country. The terrorists ought to be interrogated. Why are we being punished? What is our fault? Those who have family in the country should be permitted to remain,” Samreen said.

According to Ira, another Pakistani national, “I got married in Delhi 10 years ago. During COVID-19 my visa expired. I hold a NORI (No Obligation to Return to India) visa but due to the Pahalgam attack I have been asked to leave the country. We shouldn’t be punished for whatever happened even though it was completely wrong.”

Krishan Kumar, who also went back to Pakistan, stated, “We are returning after 45 days of my visit to India on a tourist visa. The terrorist attack in Pahalgam should prompt the government to act. Since half of the families are in this country and the other half are in that country both nations ought to remain united. Pahalgam events are wrong.”

India Cancels Visas in Response to Attack

“All currently valid visas that India has granted to citizens of Pakistan are canceled as of April 27, 2025. Pakistani citizens’ medical visas will only be good until April 29, 2025,” according to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs.
