Owaisi Leads Opposition Against Waqf Bill Amendments Today
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen party chief Asaduddin Owaisi led the charge for the opposition by moving a private member’s motion against the Waqf Bill, which was referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for scrutiny. The Bill, which proposes to amend the Waqf Act of 1995, has faced tough resistance from Muslim organizations and Opposition parties.

The JPC, of which Owaisi and other opposition MPs are members, has been assigned to scrutinize the bill and give its report. However, the opposition has criticized the bill as an effort to infringe on the rights of Muslims and Waqf property management. Owaisi has remained highly critical of this bill and termed it “enemy of Muslims.” He’s also alleged the government attempt to encroach on Waqf lands.
In the meantime, BJP MPs have proposed amendments in the bill, which is scheduled for consideration in the JPC meeting today. Though some of these proposed amendments seem to take care of the concerns that have been flagged by the opposition, it’s hard to tell whether this is going to do enough to keep the opposition’s at bay. The JPC has requested further time to prepare its report; the members argued that more time is needed for consultations with various stakeholders and for finalizing its recommendations.
