Maha Kumbh Stampede Plea Filed Against UP Government Responsibly
The Supreme Court now faces a plea that asserts the Uttar Pradesh government should be accountable for the Maha Kumbh stampede victims who lost their lives on January 29, 2025. The main event happened when people stamped each other at Prayagraj’s Sangam area that drew numerous spiritual followers coming to bathe during Mauni Amavasya celebrations. The Supreme Court faces calls to hold the Uttar Pradesh government accountable for what appears to be its blindness towards crowd management at the event that proved deadly.
Reports show the stampede developed because many devotees gathered to bathe in the river while the authorities failed to establish sufficient crowd management systems. An official request to the Supreme Court claims the state administration deliberately neglected its duty to implement preventive measures despite previous knowledge about massive expectations of attendees during the festival.

Uttar Pradesh government vowed to stop future disasters by establishing “no-vehicle zone” status in Maha Kumbh regions and rescinding VVIP access roles. The state government created helpline number 1920 to deliver aid to devotees together with their families.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with President Droupadi Murmu and other national leaders extended their sympathies to the victims’ families after the widespread criticism of the tragic event. The Supreme Court plans to hear this case shortly as authorities contemplate punishment against state officials for their supposed involvement in theуда.
