Jaffar Express Standoff Ends: Hostages Freed, Rebels and Soldiers Killed

On March 11th 2025 the Baloch Liberation Army conducted an attack against the Jaffar Express train near Bolan in Balochistan when the train carried 440 passengers between Quetta and Peshawar. An explosion attack against the train tracks by the attackers derailed the train while it was inside a tunnel then they seized control of the trapped passengers.

The armed ethnic group called BLA accepted responsibility for the attack which took place in Balochistan. Their demands for Baloch political prisoner freedom included threatening to eliminate hostages unless their terms were granted before 48 hours expired.

Pakistani security forces initiated a broad salvation operation through the joint efforts of the military with its components including Air Force and Frontier Corps and Special Service Group (SSG) commandos. The operation proceeded through demanding conditions with the dual focus to remove militants while rescuing the hostages.

The militants murdered 21 people while the standoff continued which included four members of the security personnel. The entire defensive operation resulted in the total destruction of the 33 attackers while saving more than 300 kidnapped people. During the operation security forces unfortunately lost four of their members while carrying out the mission.

Survivors described the horrifying situation by explaining how militants used passenger regional origins as criteria to select their targets especially security staff member victims. The militants abused and assaulted the captives by forcing them to act as shields against security operations.

The BLA’s mission belongs to an extensive Balochistan independence struggle which aims to gain regional self-governance and better control over natural resources. The rise in violence throughout 2024 has been remarkable since attack numbers increased by 84% in the province. Pakistani governmental representatives denounced the attack and affirmed their dedication to fight terrorism while guaranteeing safety for their people.
