A cold political shudder from years of violence pierced the edges of Bengaluru once more as the unfortunate son of the nefarious gangster Muthappa Rai became another bright target of brazen gunmen. It all boiled down to a short stark ten-word headline reading “Son Of Late Gangster Muthappa Rai Attacked By Gunmen Near Bengaluru, Hospitalised,” which was apt to give rise to stories heavy with organized crime’s murky underbelly and tendrils-the shorthand of this title belied the complicated web of power, rivalries, and potential retribution that all this unfolded into.

There was a time when Muthappa Rai would have been the name on everyone’s lips, commanding fear across Karnataka; he had a very long and tumultuous history of the crime world. Raised in quite a humble beginning, this man carved an empire for himself quite allegedly through extortion, land grabbing, and a group of very loyal followers.
