An aged couple from Beedi village tragically committed suicide after being duped by a cyberbhindi to the tune of around ₹50 lakhs. Diogjeron Santan Nazareth, 82, a retired Maharashtra government secretariat employee, as well as his wife Flaviana aged 79, were found dead at their home on March 27, 2025. Neighbors discovered Flaviana lifeless on the bed, while Diogjeron’s body was discovered in the underground water tank of their house.
A two-page handwritten death note revealed that the very couple entangled by fraudsters posing as officials from the telecommunications department and the Crime Branch. According to the handwritten note, a man named Sumit Birra contacted Diogheron, telling him that a SIM had been fraudulently purchased in his name and was being used for illegal activities. The call was then forwarded to someone called Anil Yadav, who introduced himself as a Crime Branch officer, demanded details, and threatened him with legal consequences.
Succumbing to the pressure, the couple transferred more than ₹50 lakh to the fraudsters. But, this did not stop from tormenting them further. Diogheron mentioned in the note that he had taken a gold loan of ₹7.15 lakh, interest due on June 4, and borrowed money from friends, intending to repay these debts by selling off his wife’s gold jewelry. There was an expression that, at this very advanced age and without any support, they did not wish to live under anyone’s mercy, which made them take the final and bold step; thus, deciding to die.
The incident reflects the increasing dangers of cyber frauds against innocent individuals, particularly the elderly. Cybercriminals usually engage in psychological manipulation by instilling fear and confusion in the minds of their victims, posing as some authority figure, and coercing them to part with huge amounts of money. This case illustrates the immediate need for raising public awareness and education concerning the identification of such crimes and preventive actions against them.
The investigation has been commencing against the individuals who were mentioned in the death note under the head abetment of suicide and cyber fraud. According to Belagavi Superintendent of Police Bhimashankar Guled, more than ₹50 lakhs were deposited into the account of the fraudster by the couple, and further investigations are under way.

These events remind the individual as to the great calamity which is supposed to befall him as cyberspace fraud closes in not just on the unfortunate but the whole family too. It further stresses the need for tight cyber protections from public awareness campaigns centered on awareness towards protecting the vulnerable from malicious activity. To save its own, the community must come together under the campaign to educate and protect citizens from these self-learning activities.
