BJP Condemns Congress Over DK Shivakumar’s ‘Constitution Will Be Changing’ Remark
The political situation in Karnataka became controversial after Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar made public statements about changing the constitution to provide Muslims with 4% reserved government contracts. BJP leaders have attacked Congress through their take on Shivakumar’s comments which they view as evidence that his party plans to modify the Constitution by adding religious preferences to the reservation system.
Shivakumar’s Remarks
At a recent gathering Shivakumar explained the probable legal barriers in establishing Muslim reservation at 4% levels. Although he expected court involvement he remained confident about implementing these changes by saying, “Let us wait for some good day… Constitution will be changing, there are judgments which alter the Constitution also.” Changes to the Constitution arrive through judgments with new interpretations of the existing document.
BJP’s Response
The BJP leadership delivered a forceful reaction when Shivakumar made these statements. Sunil Malviya, who heads the BJP’s IT Cell wing accused the Indian National Congress party of engaging in unjust public relations practices damaging to the country’s best interest. In a tweet DK Shivakumar declared that the Congress party plans to modify the Constitution to secure Muslim reservation. This act would mark the greatest form of disloyalty.
CR Kesavan from BJP’s national spokesperson group stated that the opposition stance against Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes represents the core position of the Congress party. Shivakumar believes that Rahul Gandhi serves as the originator behind his controversial remarks which violate the constitution.
Congress’s Position
Shivakumar conducted a defense of the reservation policy by declaring that the Congress party aims to improve all segments of the population. Through his statement Shivakumar addressed BJP opposition to Congress policies by explaining the BJP follows similar policies in government. According to Shivakumar the BJP consistently criticizes Congress policies although they embrace and eventually implement them because they share similar ideological preferences. The BJP leaders show strong support for the principles that the Congress party stands for and benefit from them.
