Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky is being lauded for standing his ground and commended for not fleeing the country in the face of the Russian invasion. He refused American help for evacuation from Ukraine.

Before he entered politics, Zelensky was an actor and comedian. Zelensky was born on January 25, 1978, in Kryvyi Rih in Ukraine, under the Soviet Union. He earned a law degree but never worked in the legal field. Zelensky starred in several TV shows and feature films. His most famous role was in ‘Servant of the people’, a TV show that aired between 2015 and 2019. He played the role of a schoolteacher who became Ukraine’s president after his rant went viral. The show ended, Zelensky announced his candidature for the presidential position. He was the most unlikely candidate.
He surprisingly won the election in 2019 with 73% of the vote. In his presidential campaign, Zelensky promised to end the conflict with Russia. His anti-corruption sentiment worked among people. However, this was tarnished when he was named in the Pandora papers for corruption. Yet he is winning praise as a wartime leader.
His response to the conflict has resonated with many Ukrainians. His speeches have won fans for their human touch. Married to Olena Zelenska since 2003, Zelensky has a son and a daughter.

At this moment when the Ukrainian capital is surrounded, the president has refused to leave.
I can’t help but think of the contrast with another president 6 months ago, in a surrounded capital.

Ukraine is not the only country in recent years under attack. In 2021, the world was worried about Afghanistan when the Taliban took control.
As the Taliban forces invaded the capital Kabul, then Afghan president Ashraf Ghani chose to flee from the country allegedly with all the money and wealth he could carry along.
Emma Graham-Harrison, a western journalist who writes for the Guardian, compared Zelensky’s situation to Ashraf Ghani’s while his capital was surrounded.
“In the face of a surrounded Ukraine and its president refusing to leave, I am reminded of a tweet that Emma sent six months ago when there was a surrounded capital, almost the same thing.”
According to her, Ashraf Ghani abandoned Kabul and its people to the Taliban.

Where is Ashraf Ghani?
Ghani is in the United Arab Emirates. In a recent interview with the BBC, ex-Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said that as the Taliban approached the nation’s boundaries. Therefore, he had no choice left but to leave the country abruptly. He also added that his adviser only gave him a couple of minutes to make a decision. Ghani dismissed all the accusations of flying with loads of money with him.
A recent report says that the United Nations has removed Ashraf Ghani’s name from the state’s head list. In response to criticism that he had abandoned the country, Ghani said leaving was “the hardest thing” he had ever done.
Some people, in contrast, have retouched pictures of former Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and his vice president Amrullah Saleh dressed in Ukrainian military uniforms and captioning them as having joined Ukraine’s forces to fight off Russia.

Do you think a state chief only has to gather votes and enjoy the public assets, or they should stand by his mother in bad times also?
