The last two years, 2020 and 2021, are mainly known as the time when the pandemic was unleashed in the world. But it is also important to note that these years were also immensely politically charged. Some events that happened during this time, especially in 2021, have left a mark on the world and have created history. Let’s take a look at what are they-
JANUARY

On January 6, 2021, a mob of Trump supporters took to the US Capitol in an attempt to overturn the election results which were in favour of the Biden Government. The whole attack was indirectly organised by Donald Trump who claimed that the election results were rigged and false.
Jan 26, Farmers’ protest in Delhi takes a violent turn

The otherwise peaceful farmers’ protest took a violent turn on the Republic Day, when a faction of the protesters deviated from the pre-planned route and marched towards the Red Fort. The faction butted heads with the police where both the parties suffered injuries. The protest is against the three farm laws proposed by the Modi government.

A coup d’état in Myanmar led by the Myanmar military, removed Aung San Suu Kyi, along with other elected members of the National League for Democracy from power and assumed office to establish Military rule in Myanmar. This also led to what has been termed as Spring Revolution in the country.

One of the world’s largest container ships gets stuck in the Suez Canal. The vessel was stuck in the canal for a total of six days which caused major disruption in world trade. Strong winds and currents were the reason the ship was wedged in the canal.

Apr 21, Second wave of coronavirus outbreak hits India
On this day, India confirmed the second wave of the coronavirus outbreak. On April 21, 2021, India reported 315,000 cases in just 24 hrs, which were recorded the highest all over the world.

May 11, Israeli airstrike on Gaza Strip
The Israel- Palestine crisis takes an ugly turn when Israel hits the Gaza Strip with an airstrike. The airstrikes later destroyed several high- rise buildings such as those which occupied important press organisations such as Associated Press and Al Jazeera.

JUL 19, Blue Origin completes its first Human test flight
On this day, Blue Origin conducted and successfully completed its first human test flight. The company used the New Shepherd rocket onboard which were the founder of Blue Origin Jeff Bezos, his brother, Mark Bezos, 82 year old aviator, Wally Funk, and the youngest space tourist, 18 year old Oliver Daemen.

As the US troops return from Afghanistan, Taliban takes over the Afghan capital city Kabul. During this time, the Afghani president, Ashraf Ghani also fled the country along with many high ranking officials. The takeover gave rise to immense violence in the country after which the Afghan government surrendered control to Taliban.

The Tripura violence started in response to the recent violent attacks on the hindu minority of Bangladesh. Rallies were taken out by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Hindu Jagran Manch (HJM), mainly triggered by fake news and rumours on social media.
