Good News: Manipur Sangai festival returns after 2 years

This year from November 21 to 30, The Manipur state government is organising the Sangai Festival, to attract tourists and promote Manipur as a world-class destination.

 After a 2-year hiatus caused by the pandemic, the festival will return under the theme of ‘Festival of Oneness’, named after the state animal. The Eld’s deer is an endangered species that can only be found in Manipur.

 Festivals will be held in 13 places across the state, bringing Manipuri culture, traditions, and art together to strengthen the socioeconomic milieu. Several huts representing the tribal groups will be set up at Sangai Ethnic Park in Moirang for the primary celebration.

Good news: Massachusetts got its 1st woman and lesbian governor

Maura Healey, Democratic Attorney General, has been elected governor of Massachusetts, making history. She is the state’s 1st woman and openly gay candidate elected to the office. Her opponent was Republican Geoff Diehl, who had the endorsement of former President Donald Trump.

 Healey and her running mate, Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll, were among 3 all-female governor/lieutenant governor tickets in the US that began Election Day in the hope of becoming the 1st pairing elected to lead a state.

Healey was also 1 of 2 openly lesbian candidates who ran to be governor in the country. In addition to Tina Kotek, a Democrat running for Oregon governor, each candidate began the day hoping to become the first openly lesbian governor.

Maharashtra police sub-inspector post to be reserved for transgender community  

 A Mumbai bench of the Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal (MAT) has ordered the state government to reserve 1 police sub-inspector (PSI) post for transgender people.

According to MAT’s chairperson, retired justice Mridula Bhatkar, all state governments must have a reservation for transgender people in all public appointments as per the Supreme Court’s 2014 judgment.

Vinayak Kashid, a transgender candidate applying for the PSI’s post, filed the petition. In his application, he asked for the reservation of seats for transgender people in an advertisement issued by the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) in June 2022 for 800 PSI posts.

MBBS, BDS seats reserved for J&K terror victims: Home Ministry

For the academic year 2022-23, the Union ministry of home affairs will keep a “reserved quota” for children and spouses of terror victims in Jammu and Kashmir.

It will be for the children whose parents were killed by terrorists, families whose sole bread earners, and wards of victims with permanent disabilities and severe injuries and causalities caused by terrorist operations, will receive priority, according to MHA’s official notification.

The candidate must obtain a minimum of 50% marks individually in the subjects such as chemistry, physics, biotechnology, and biology. 40% has been fixed for the ST, SC, OSC, PWD and OBC, and 45% for PWDs in the general category.

The selection of candidates for admission in BDS/ MBBS courses will be based on their rank in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) 2022. For NEET 2022, candidates must score 50%, 40% for SC/ST/OBCs, and 45% for students with disabilities.

Good news: Meet Seema Devi, first e-rickshaw driver of Jammu and Kashmir

Seema Devi of the Nagrota area of J&K is the 1st woman e-rickshaw driver from the valley. In her 40s, Seema explored many options to support herself until her husband discovered discounted e-rickshaws. The couple bought the electric 3-wheeler on EMI, and Seema’s husband taught her how to drive.

To make the brave move, Seema had to overcome social barriers and the fear of having bystanders and commuters look at her amused. Despite working full-time, Seema finds it easy to manage her household responsibilities. In the morning, she departs in her vehicle and attends to household responsibilities as she has time.
