After a long weekend, social media was spiced up with a long list of fake news and fake claims. Some of them are partially true while others are completely misleading.

Therefore, here are the fake news of the week.

Congress UP rally to claim Appeasement!

Claim:

A compilation of two videos is being shared by several Twitter users, including BJP Spokesperson Sambit Patra, showing azan being recited at Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi. It was also claimed that this was done to appease voters of the minority community.

Fact:

Here is the truth behind the viral videos. It is true that the Congress party played azan in the rally. But they did not just play the azan but also hymns of the other religions too such as Hinduism, and Sikhism. Therefore, the claim is partially true.

A photo shows the recent face-off between the Indian and Chinese armies in Arunachal Pradesh. The Indian Army held over 150 Chinese soldiers hostage in Arunachal Pradesh.

Read our fact-check here. The picture is a still from a 2021 web film titled L.A.C, which was based on the Galwan clash that happened in 2020. Hence, it is far from any truth behind it.

Win cash price at the 75th anniversary of Amul!

Claim:

Amul organized a survey on its 75th anniversary with a cash price of rupees 6000.

Fact:

The claim is fabricated. Amul has clarified that it did not organize the survey. It has termed the viral message as spam. Therefore, the claim to win cash on Amul’s 75-anniversary celebration is false.

Claim: 

A message viral on social media claims WhatsApp will not be free to use if a particular message is not forwarded to other contracts.

Fact:

Do ignore such messages as they are meant to be ignored. This message was viral multiple times since 2014. WhatsApp has not mentioned anything about charging the app. The claim is fabricated.

Fact:

The fact is that Maneka Gandhi had never included her party name in the Twitter bio. The claim is misleading.

Claim:

Hours after the Nobel prize for literature was announced, congratulatory tweets tagging the man of the moment, Abdulrazak Gurnah flooded Twitter timelines. The Twitter profile @GurnahAuthor belongs to the winner of the Nobel prize for literature, Abdulrazak Gurnah.

Fact: 

Error alert! There was a glitch. Everyone tagged an imposter. Profile originally went by the handle @ErnauxA, later changed to impersonate Gurnah.

TATA Group: Participate in the survey to win a car!

Claim: 

“TATA Group is celebrating its 150th anniversary, and on this occasion participated in the survey to win a car.” This viral message also shared a link to ‘to win a car’.

Fact: 

The content is absolutely false. TATA Group is 153 years old and the company did not invite any participants to take part in any survey. The TATA group has called the message fake and asked people to not click on the link or forward it to others.

Video showing atrocity in Afghanistan against humanity!

Claim: 

A video of a man stoned to death is shared claiming to be the Taliban’s recent brutality in Afghanistan.

Fact:

This is false. The video is from 2018 where members of ISIL (the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) stoned a man to death.

Claim:

A video of a speeding car running into a religious procession is being shared, claiming to be yet another incident of communal violence in Chhattisgarh.

Amit Malviya, BJP’s IT Head posted the clip on Twitter saying that this is the second incident of communal profiling and assault on Hindus.

Fact:

The viral claim is false. According to the Scroll, on 15 October, a Madhya Pradesh registered car was overspeeding to abscond police checking. It rammed into a religious procession at Pathalgaon in the Jashpur district of Chhattisgarh. It led to the death of a young man with at least 16 injured. Devotees were carrying out rallies for the immersion of Goddess Durga’s idol following Navratri.
