Explained: The fall of Afghanistan

The Fall of Afghanistan: What’s next as
Taliban ends U.S. era in Afghanistan

How the world witnessed Afghanistan military forces and government surrendering to the Taliban without a fight? Here, we have tried to explain the fall of Afghanistan in simple pointers

The entire world was shocked by horrifying scenes that went viral on the internet of desperate and innocent people in Afghanistan raced to Kabul’s international airport for survival & one last escape to one of the last routes out of the country and then falling to death as the Taliban takes charge.

The Taliban is known as a militant group that ran the country in the late 1990s, have taken control of Afghanistan once again and storm across the country and as per reports, it happened just two weeks before the United States forces were set to leave after a costly two-decade war.

The fall  of Afghan forces raise multiple questions over its 2-decade long training and funding by the United States as the soldiers were no match to Taliban forces who captured the entire nation and are reportedly in Kabul now.

Before all this, the intelligence analysts of the United States predicted that it may take several more weeks for the Afghanistan government to fell to Taliban militants. However, in reality, it only took them a few days. It is “gut-wrenching” what’s happening in Afghanistan, said US President Biden & acknowledged that the collapse of the Afghan government happened much more quickly than he anticipated.

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN AFGHANISTAN NOW?

Multiple news reports have indicated that Afghan women are being tortured, killed, and used as sex slaves by the Taliban even after the hardline Islamist group’s assurance that they will respect their rights and allow them to work and be educated in accordance with Islam, a former judge from Afghanistan has said.

According to the confidential report, a threat assessment from the United Nations has warned the Taliban is intensifying a search operation for people who worked or helped the United States and NATO forces and is going for manhunt door to door.

The UN’s threat assessment and multiple news media revealed that the Taliban is looking for people to arrest and are threatening to kill or arrest their family members if they do not surrender.

Now, what’s next in Afghanistan is not clear but the Taliban say that they will form an “inclusive, Islamic government” and are holding negotiations with senior politicians, along with leaders in the former government. The Taliban have pledged to enforce Islamic law and encouraged women to join their government & offering them a secure environment with normal life after decades of war.

Taliban have also promised to respect the country’s women’s rights and to forgive those who fought against them and prevent Afghanistan from being used as a base for terror attacks. However, many Afghans are skeptical of such promises.

WHY ARE PEOPLE FLEEING FROM THE COUNTRY?

People of Afghanistan are worried about the future as they think the Taliban could carry out multiple revenge attacks against the ones who worked with the Americans or the government.

Also, many fear that the Taliban will bring back the harsh interpretation of Islamic law that they relied on from 1996 to 2001 as back then, women in Afghanistan were barred from attending school or working outside the home. The Taliban banned all sorts of adulterers’ entertainment and forced women to wear the all-encompassing burqa and to be accompanied by a male relative when going outside.
