Here are the interesting Dr Subramanian Swamy and why his intellect cannot be questioned
Dr Subramanian Swamy may have turned 83, but he is never in the mood to slow down. His controversies, interviews, and outspoken nature have made him a consummate politician of contrary views. He is a relentless crusader and an opinionated academic.
Swamy is no stranger to controversies. He is among the politicians who are never afraid to slam even an ally. He made a name for himself by taking on the rich and powerful. Born on 15 September 1939, he is an Indian Politician, economist, and statistician and also nominated member of parliament in Rajya Sabha.
The list of his achievements does not stop here. So, here is a list of why Dr Subramanyam Swamy should be the finance minister of India. And why his intellect cannot be questioned.
Swamy and his achievements and why he should be Finance minister
Swamy earned his bachelor’s degree from Hindu College, Delhi University, in mathematics. He took his Master’s Degree in Statistics from the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. He went to Harvard University on a full Rockefeller scholarship for his doctorate. He received a PhD in Economics in 1965. His thesis adviser was Nobel Laureate Simon Kuznets.
In 1969, Dr Subramanian Swamy was a professor of Mathematical economics at IIT Delhi but was sacked later by Indra Gandhi due to his economic opinions.
In 1986, he was a consultant to the World Bank.
Swamy worked towards normalizing Indochina relations. His relations with China were so strong that even Indira Gandhi and Manmohan Singh sought his views. Because of his efforts, Hindu devotees got access to Kailash ManSarovar Yatra.
He also guided PV Narsimha Rao over economic blueprints in 1992.
Relation with controversies
In 1975, at the time of emergency, Swamy fled successfully to America after attending the parliamentary session. However, an arrest warrant was already issued against him.
Swamy also earned the sobriquet Chanakya of Indian politics. The period from 1966-1998 was volatile for Indian politics. In 1998, Swamy called for a ‘chai party.’ After that, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) leader J Jayalalithaa united the coalition with Atal Bihari Vajpayee. As a result, the BJP government had to step down from the Ministry.
In 1996, he filed a criminal complaint against former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha. That led to her prosecution, conviction, and 4-year jail term.
In 2008, he exposed the multi-crore 2G scam implicating both former Telecom Minister A Raja and the EX-finance minister P. Chidambaram.
In 2012, he accused Sonia and Rahul Gandhi of committing fraud worth rupees 2000 crore in the National Herald case.
He targeted Sonia again on the AgustaWestland Scam in 2016. Swamy is also known for his sharp personal attacks against his political opponents, particularly when it comes to the Nehru-Gandhi Family.
If Swamy is considered chiefly an anti-corruption crusader, there is also the pro-Hindutva Champion facet in his personality.
A very happy birthday to you!
