Crime against women has continued unabated across India despite the various laws meant to protect women. In fact, in the past few years, the Brutal Rape cases in India have only escalated.
These horrific incidents must not be allowed to get overshadowed by other news headlines that are currently on.
We have compiled some of these gruesome incidents of Brutal Rape cases in India.

Nirbhaya Gang-rape case

On 16 December 2012, 6 men gang-raped a 23-year-old paramedic student on a moving bus. However, soon the accused were identified and arrested. The trial began, but protests against the culprits broke out nationwide, and Delhi-NCR was the main chamber for it.
Amid all the uproar, the victim’s condition went critical, and she was shifted to Singapore. Later, Nirbhaya succumbed to injuries adding murder charges against the culprits.
Ram Singh, the bus driver, hands himself in jail. However, the Supreme court upholds the Death penalty for 4 convicts saying the case falls under the ‘Rarest of Rare’ category.
Finally, after rejecting all the mercy pleas by convicts, all 4 were hanged to death.
The Bilkis Bano gang rape case
Amidst the Gujarat riots, 17 members of the Bilkis family were fleeing their riot-hit Randhikpur town. A mob of 20-30 men armed with swords and sticks gang-raped a 21-year-old pregnant Bilkis Bano and killed 7 members of her family, including Bilkis’s 3-year-old daughter. The home guard helped to lodge a complaint at a police station.
Bilkis fought for justice and identified all the accused during the trial. The CBI Special Court judge described Bilkis as a ‘Courageous Deposition.’ The Court sentenced the 11 accused to life imprisonment in January 2008. However, after 15 years in jail, convicts were set free under the 1992 sentence remission policy.
Hyderabad vet rape-murder case
A charred body of a vet from Hyderabad was recovered from City’s underpass. On the highway, the veterinarian noticed that her scooty’s tyres were flat and needed to be fixed.
Soon some men stepped out of the dark and offered her help. But the men seemed suspicious of the young vet, and she called her sister and said she was scared. After this, her phone was switched off.
According to the police, the 4 accused abducted, raped, and killed her before setting her body on fire.
4 accused, including a truck driver and 3 cleaners, were arrested. Protests erupted across Hyderabad, demanding justice for the victim.
A Special Investigation Team of Cyberabad police custody the accused for further investigation. However, as per the police, an exchange of fire took place near the Chatanpally underpass, where the charred body of the vet was found. The accused allegedly tried to flee when they were taken to Chantanpally to reconstruct the crime scene.
Unnao Rape case
In June 2017, a minor girl from the Unnao district of UP was allegedly raped by BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar, his brother, and other accomplices. The victim’s family tried filing a report, but according to the family, the police refused to file an FIR.
Eventually, they had to file the report in Court. Again, the police didn’t take any action. In April 2018, when the victim’s father confronted the MLA’s family, they were brutally thrashed and arrested under the Arms act. The news got out in the media when tired of police inaction, the victim tried to immolate herself in front of UP CM’s house. A day after, her father died in police custody, and an autopsy report revealed 14 injuries. It is alleged that the father was beaten in police custody by MLA Kuldeep Senger’s brother Atul. SIT was formed to probe the case. And after nationwide outrage, the UP government transferred the case to CBI. And finally, Kuldeep Senger was arrested.
However, the main witness died under mysterious circumstances. Before CBI could know about it, he was already buried. Also, on 27 December 2018, UP police registered an FIR against the victim, her uncle, and her mother for forgery.
On 28 July 2019, when the victim and her aunt, relative, and lawyer returned in a car after meeting her uncle in jail, their vehicle collided with an over-speeding truck. The victim’s aunt and relative died on the spot. However, the victim and lawyer suffered severe injuries. In December 2021, Kuldeep Senger and 5 others walked out untainted from the case due to a lack of evidence.
Conclusion
The Brutal Rape cases in India were only highlighted in these incidents once they gained media attention. In some cases, justice was delivered, while in others, the culprits walked out free.
Remember, these are only reported incidents or cases that have surfaced over time due to different dimensions. In most cases lay buried, calmed, or even simply dead. Sometimes, the victim is threatened with silence, or the family is forced to step back.
In many cases, the family had said that there was none-corporation from the police and administration. Mainly because the accused were powerful. But there is one fact that remains constant.
‘Betis of this country continue to face sexual assault crime, even murder, despite political sloganeering. And the nation’s heart weeps when culprits are set free due to loopholes in the law or lack of evidence.’
