Janpath, a market situated in the heart of the city- is well known for having the trendiest clothes at a throwaway price. But within the by lanes of Janpath is a place which takes to a completely different place. And if you are a folk embroidery freak you have landed up at the right place- GUJARATI MARKET. Daily visitors to Janpath must have observed group of women selling handicraft items – ranging from cushion and pillow covers, bed sheets, wall hangings and lehengas. Their ghoonghats might deceive you but don’t underestimate their business sense.
For most than past 20 years Gujarati market has become a famous place to look for Indian handicraft goods – from Kutch and other places in Gujarat and even Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Punjab with over 40 women trying to sell their wares.
Chattering amongst themselves in Gujarati, they can break out in English and Hindi equally fluently to attract the tourists. One is surely going to get all awed by the mirror work, saris, kurtis, lenhengas, jewellery, cluth, purses, slings, and other folk items available here.
But beware. Don’t forget to bargain. If you wish to get items at a great price, the best time is to go between 12-2pm as it might be their ‘boni’ time. You might just end up getting the things you love at a very cheap rate.
