World Diabetic patients
The number of diabetics is escalating rapidly and there is an increasing need of creating widespread about the disease and ways to prevent it. According to WHO more than 346 million people suffer from diabetes around the world. Without any intervention, this number can double by the year 2030.
November 14 is celebrated as World Diabetes (WDD) every year across the globe. The day is important in creating awareness about diabetes.
‘Started by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and WHO, the Day is celebrated on 14 November to mark the birthday of Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best, was instrumental in the discovery of insulin in 1922, a life-saving treatment for diabetes patients.’
In 2007, the UNO passes a resolution and declared November 14 as World Diabetes Day. The day draws attention to the paramount significance of understanding the adverse effects of diabetes and their impact on life.
‘Diabetes Education and Prevention is the World Diabetes Day theme for the period 2009-2013.’
Various activities are organized such as sport events, television programmes, seminars, public meetings, articles in newspapers and magazines, press conferences, plantation of trees, leaflet and poster campaign, painting competition, monument lightings, human blue circles, runs, walks, cycle race, etc.
Logo of World Diabetes Day:
The logo of World Diabetes Day has blue circle and was adopted by the United Nations in 2007 to commemorate the passage of United Nations World Diabetes Day Resolution. The circle signifies health and life and the blue color is symbolic of sky uniting all countries of the world and it is also the color of the flag of the United Nations Organization. The blue circle depicts the global unity for the diabetes community and shows pandemic support for the ailment.
