UNGLI
“The title of the movie was originally supposed to be ‘Smiley gang’ but ultimately came up to be Ungli” says Imran Hashmi.
The movie coveys the idea of “Rebel against unethical practices”, Ungli is a metaphor for rebellion. The idea is to showcase the issues which trouble the common man, from corruption to pot holes to traffic administration to public transport. In fact Imran himself has suffered the inconvenience caused by auto and taxi walas.

He says, “I have suffered using public transport where the taxis and autos over charge shamelessly. Making a film like this is our way of giving voices to these issues.”
Imran Hashmi also points out that the Indian audience is an escapist audience. One of his former movies, Shanghai, got too close to the reality and hence didn’t do well. Randeep Hooda points out that the state of the country is in dire need of an overhaul. But he is optimistic about this current Government. “Things have changed for good since the Modi government took charge” says Randeep Hooda.
Imran Hashmi with his ungali moment
The idea that a common man from humble roots can become the Prime Minister of the country is a good sign. But Randeep Hooda also says that one of the biggest aspects of this movie is friendship. The gang which wanted to shake up the system.
On enquiring about his Ungli moment Angad says “I come from a cricketing background. So my Ungli moment would be my run-ins with the cricket association”.
Randeep Hooda stating the gist of the movie
Imran once had to face racial discrimination to which he complained and had his ‘Ungli’ moment.
On being asked if he has lived up to his ‘Serial Kisser’ reputation, Imran says “I have kissed a stranger in this movie. I didn’t even know her name” To which Randeep Hooda takes a dig by asking Imran if kissing is the new hello.
