UK to shut down all coal fired power plants by 2025
The UK government has decided to shut down all its’ operational coal fired power plants by 2025, with useage being restricted by 2023.
In this context, since approx 28 percent of the current power requirements of the island nation are met by coal, the Government is laying emphasis on construction of more gas powered plants to meet the deficit.
UK is also building two new nuclear power plants, one in Wales, and the other in Cumbria, which are expected to contribute significantly to meeting the power requirements.
This announcement is significant, not only in the reduction of UK’s carbon footprint, but also in it’s timing, coming just before the Paris UN Climate Summit being held later in the month.
