The iconic Deven Varma passed away today, on 02 December 2, 2014, due to a heart attack and renal failure. The veteran Bollywood actor popular for his comic performances left our midst at the Sahyadri Hospital at 2 am last night, at the age of 77. According to his relatives, he had been keeping unwell for some time and was suffering from diabetes and heart conditions. He is survived by his wife, Rupa Ganguly, daughter of the late Ashok Kumar.


Born on 23 October, 1937 in Pune, he completed his education from the Nowrosjee Wadia College for Arts and Science, with an honors degree in Politics and Sociology. Beginning as a stage artist, his Bollywood debut performance was in Yash Chopra’s ‘Dharmaputra’ in the year 1961, as a supporting actor. He shot to fame with his memorable performances in films like Angoor, Khatta Meetha, Golmaal etc. He won a series of Filmfare Awards for Best Comedian for films like, Chori Mera Kaam, Chor Ke Ghar Chor and Angoor. His comic timing and effortless performances were much appreciated and he was a favorite amongst directors like Basu Chatterjee, Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Gulzar who cast him in most of their films.

From the recent crop of films, he worked in Dil to Pagal Hai, Ishq, Kya Kehna and his last Hindi film was Calcutta Mail released in 2003. Apart from Bollywood, he also worked in a couple of Bhojpuri and Marathi films.


He was highly respected and acclaimed in the film industry and was popular amongst the masses. His death is a great loss for the film industry. Along with the rest of the nation, we too pay our respects to this legendary actor.
