TRAINING FEEDS ME: KRIS GETHIN
TRAINING FEEDS ME: KRIS GETHIN
No, the size of the body has nothing to do with the nature of a person. Earlier, we would assume a person to be angry-young-man because of his huge built but surely now this assumption has grown old. Every second guy these days can be seen working hard at gym to get a body like heart-throb Hrithhik Roshan or dream about John Abraham. But just like behind every successful man there is a woman similarly, behind every well-built sexy body, there is an amazing trainer. Yes, we are talking about Kris Gethin, the sole reason behind the body of Krrish urf Hrithik Roshan and the Garam Masala of the Bollywood, John Abraham.
A.Kameshwari from One World News had an opportunity to get an exclusive interview while he was conducting a seminar for the gym-trainers in Delhi’s Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts. In conversation with her, Kris expressed a lot about himself and his experience with Bollywood and so on.
OWN: Tell me something about yourself?
Kris: (Counter questioning) Well, would you like to know the part people don’t know about me or the part people already know?
OWN: Anything you are comfortable to talk about.
Well I am from Wales; I got into health and fitness by accident. I got injured because I used to race motor-cross years ago. When nothing was working out for my pain, I tried rehab through weight training and I enjoyed the feeling of it. I was more energized and my confidence was boosted. So, I decided to continue ever since. I went to university and studied health and sports therapy for three years, and then I worked as a personal trainer. Later, I moved to Australia, owned a gym facility there and then in USA, I also worked in Los Angeles for several years.

I worked as a writer, photographer and as a personal trainer at Flex Magazine. I published my own health and fitness magazine too for a while and then I got offer as an editor-in-chief at bodybuilding.com, which is one of the largest health and fitness websites. I had around 500 writers under me and during this time I was competing as a natural body builder professional in Canada’s world championship and I won the second position.
How you landed in India?
My book, ‘Body by Design,’ brought me to India. When three years ago, Hrithik Roshan read that book, he put a word out if anyone could help him in transformation; apparently my name came up a lot of times. So, he called up my manager, after which, I had a word with him and as I am spontaneous, I said yes why not! So, had a consultation with him and knew that he would be very dedicated and motivated. I decided to make a big league to India and came here for 12 weeks and been here since then.
How has been your journey so far?
Fantastic! Well that’s why I am here. I have many business ventures overseas, I have food line called ‘Nutrition by Design,’ we also have physique elite, which is a global network of trainers, that is why I am here today, giving education to physical trainers in India. And now the reason, why I am stuck around here, is due to the motivation and dedication Indian people have. The people here look success as happiness, but not in materialistic things like westerns. I really enjoy this about India, but the physical and health education is really lacking, so that is why, we have decided to stay here and expand here.

What are you future plans?
We are also introducing supplement line, in adherence to the health guidelines, which would be produced in India, leading to secondary income for the trainers as a retailer. We also introduced the ‘Body Power,’ which is world’s largest interactive health and fitness expo to India; we conducted it 4 months ago and are all set to do the next one, which would probably take place in March of next year at Mumbai. Along with it, I have contract with NDTV, where I’ll shoot health and fitness Pilates with them for TV, mobile, websites etc.
Through Bodybulding.com, where most people know me due to my 12 weeks transformation plan, I have taken permission to allow me to do second version of that plan whose shooting is in process now.
So would the transformation plan have only trained people or beginners as well?
The program is for the beginners, intermediates, advanced, young old, male female, vegetarians and non-vegetarians etc. whatever you name it. When I did the last video trainer, I had so many questions from people on how they can remove their man-boobs, how they can have a good built while being a vegetarian etc. so, I thought of answering these questions. Also, people in India mostly say that they can’t transform because they are vegetarian or don’t have right equipments and stuff. So, what I want to do is to give global reach to India and tell people of India that it is possible to transform in mere 12 weeks, with food available here.

Did you always want to be a trainer?
As I mentioned earlier, it was by sheer accident that I got into this field. When I started feeling the change within myself I wanted people to experience it too. I was a lazy person, who was suffering from asthma, when I started to overcome asthma, I felt better about myself as I was beginning to be more confident. I was doing well in every zone of my life. As my energy increased, now I want to do more than what I would have done earlier in one single day. The only problem is that I can’t relax anymore; I find it hard to sit through entire movie or lay down on beach so, that’s why I keep myself engaged in training myself and others. I’ll probably be depressed if I don’t do all of this. People can treat their ailment.
How many celebrities have you trained till now?
Personally, I have just trained three in India, I have other trainers and now I hardly do personal training because I don’t have that much time. I trained Hrithik for 14 to 15 months because I stayed with him during the duration of Krrish, John Abraham for many months and then Mahesh Babu of Tollywood. Other than that, our customers are many, like Karan Johar, Irfan Khan, Arjun Kapoor, Ranveer Singh and the list goes on.
Did you think you will be so famous one day?
I am privileged. I wouldn’t say I am here because I am very educated but because I believe in real life results. People get inspired because of the real life experiences and observations. With that observation, comes transformation. I’ll always use this position to help people and gain more, so transforming public figures like Hrithik Roshan or John Abraham would be more effective as they can reach out to more people here as compared to me. So,l having Hrithik on front page of my book in India would probably help it sell better than what I could do. Now, when I want to do Pilates on television, I have these big stars coming up and telling why Kris needs to be on TV, which would be better for me and would help me in shaping up India.

What has been your best moment till now?
It’s hard to choose one. I have grown a lot from within. If I am growing within myself then I am giving purpose to myself and people around. For people, training is secondary, they have career, family etc. but for me it is the primary purpose. People often ask me how I have time to train, whereas I tell them that I should be asked how I have time for other things, because my training is first priority. I don’t care how much I have slept, if someone needs me, I’ll fly to no boundaries. Training feeds me and I would be depressed if I don’t train. It is people who give me purpose, and every time people read my books, watch videos etc. then that’s what would be my high point in life, so can’t point at one thing.
How would you describe yourself?
That’s an interesting question. I’ll call myself purpose built, focused but easily distractive, I have to stay busy else I get distracted. Multifaceted, because I do so many things together for example read three books together because I’ll get bored of one and same applies to my work too because if I work only on one thing I’ll get bored of it and moreover I think I can’t excel in one thing so I do multiple things together.
Have you learnt Hindi?
I was going to do a documentary with John Abraham, so I have tried to learn Hindi but my schedule is never the same. I mean, what I have today will not be the same for tomorrow, so I ended up cancelling with Hindi teacher because I already missed 9 out of 10 classes and I didn’t want to piss this person. I was over-seas for four months so I just know few words but can at least tell the driver to stop his car, ‘Yahan rukho, wahaan rukho.’
Message to our readers:
Focus on your health fitness and appearance goals and live your presence. A lot of people are covered up in the hustle and bustle of life because of thinking about tomorrow and yesterday, but they can double their lifespan not only with healthy food, but by appreciating what they have at the moment. Put yourself on priority to look after others and remember, if you are happy about yourself then you can inspire others too!
