The many colours of Indian Music
The many colours of Indian Music
Everyone loves music. Everyone doesn’t like the same kind of music, though, and everyone doesn’t like the same music at all times. It depends on our mood, our line of thought, our taste, and music preference.
Some people like slow songs, which are lyrical, some with high tempo to wake you up from the slumber. Some like soulful songs, which fills one with optimism. While some like serene songs to just float in another dimension.
Music is a major factor in all facets of Indian culture. Whether there is a wedding or a house party, our tastes range from peppy Punjabi numbers, to the emotional yet soulful, Kishore Kumar songs.
Music also plays a big role in uplifting, or at times, taking out the overwhelming emotions suppressed. Some of the forms, which quench our thirst for music, presently are:
Punjabi Numbers: There isn’t any North-Indian wedding, without the Punjabi numbers. And not just the peppy groovy numbers, but the emotional and romantic ones as well. Whether it is BabbuMaan, or DiljitDosanjh whose songs are deep and lyrical, or GurdasMaan who plucks a string with his alaap, Punjabi numbers are trending!
Indian Hiphop/Rap: It is one of the most trending genres of music in India, from 10 yr old kids to 30 yr olds; everyone loves the hip-hops of YoYo Honey Singh. It has become so popular, that it has also taken a major place in Bollywood music.
Serene/Soulful Music: There is another genre which is high on the charts, soulful music, which takes you to a state of trance. Singers like Mohit Chauhan, Arijit Singh, ShafqatAmanat Ali and KK are some of the names who can conjure such magic.
Classics: What can be classier than classics! Those sublime songs by Kishore, Manna Dey, or peppy retro numbers of R.D. Burman. Old days were magic. Listening to the lyrical geniuses likeMd. Rafi and the simplicity of Mukesh makes us want to go back in time.
Bollywood numbers: The typical dancing numbers, which unites the whole of India by the funny dance moves to classy twists and grooves. Songs which make one happy to sappy. Bollywood has the power to do so. Whether it is the earthen folk songs by AarifLohar, the heart-touching songs of Sonu Nigam or the mast songs of Neeraj Sridhar, Bollywood shakes all up.
