The man who sculpts stars
The man who sculpts stars
Meet Kris Gethin, the fitness teacher from — the man behind the ‘Krissh-cuts’ body of Hrithik Roshan, in conversation with A.Kameshwari.
Fitness has become the first thing on the priority list of the people. But how beneficial gym is or what moves are better for your body, how to judge if repetitions are shaping you up or the heavy weights are doing so etc. are among few questions one always have before joining a gym. In this candid interview, Kris Gethin clear out myths that surround the body building world.
People complaint about knee pain and back ache, what is the reason behind it and how can it be treated?
Everybody is different, so I would recommend them to first get their body check up done and then head towards gym. If some problem is detected you should address it to the trainer, other than this the reason behind the pain can be wrong postures for exercises or not doing enough warm-up. Performing exercise incorrectly puts pressure on your spine and ligaments. The ligaments get swollen and pains for a longer time, which is the reason why everything has to be done accurately. People who suffer from arthritis should do weight training because it helps in thickening of the bone/increase density, also improves the synovial fluid which is like the oil between the joints, so a lot of people who have joint problem gyming can help you to recover.
When Hrithik had contramalasia on knees and two slip disks on back doctors told him to be on bed rest for 9 weeks, he didn’t even move for 9 weeks which is the worst thing to do. His muscles have become weak and put pressure more on spinal cord and that’s why we adopted 12 weeks program where our focus was to release pressure from his spine and strengthen his muscles and to give him complete transformation. We were pretty successful in that as Hrithik was extremely dedicated.
Does supplements or workout has to do something with impotency as well?
No, well training can actually improve your testosterone level and obviously there are natural forms of testosterone leaf like Tribulus terrestris which comes from the leaves of the roots of a plant , is a derivative which helps in keeping up the testosterone level but it depends on the age of the person too. But other than that intake of omega oil, egg yolks, peanuts and other healthy fats would definitely affect your testosterone level.
It is said it is necessary to take supplements for achieving a body like Hrithik Roshan and John Abraham, how much do you agree with it?
I agree and disagree too, supplements affects just 3%-5% on your overall result. It depends on what sort of person you are. If you skip a lot of meals then for you supplement is important because it will provide you with nutrients and vitamins you haven’t had through meal. Supplements are derivative of milk’s proteins without sugar and fats, so yes it is better for you. But yes there is a black market for supplements too, so you have to be careful about that. For instance if you are building up free radical damage or don’t eat much fruits then you would need anti-oxidants.
The quicker you get recovered of your workout the better you would get the results. So taking additional protein as compared to standard person would help you to maintain your health. People do say that supplements are bad, so yes if you take every available supplement, you will probably die. So, one has to make wise choice on what sort of supplements to take, after completely knowing what the need of their body is. Soil today is over harvested to what it was couple of years ago, so the minerals and vitamins level has much reduced to what they were 30 years ago, so you have to take supplements to have optimal health.
When a newcomer approaches you, what do you suggest or what guidance you provide to them?
There is no shortcut, you can’t take supplements and expect of some miracle. You can’t follow a particular training plan because you think it’s going to work for you. Focus on consistency rather than trying everything. Cut down your plans to small training plans.
Slow movements are more beneficial and repetition moves are not?
Well it’s again a combination of 50-50, depending on the individuals and their genetic make-up, you are made up of slow twitch muscle fiber and fast twitch muscle fiber, so you need to do combinations of both. We follow the same in DTP plan wherein we do multiple repetitions with less weight and slow moves with heavy weight and less repetitions, one is supposed to use oxygen for higher reps and carbohydrates for lower reps and they both utilize calories so why not built muscles and loose fat at the same time.
Ill recommend everyone to do weight training because it improves body postures, ailments, heart diseases, arthritis, blood pressure, obesity etc. and you will burn lot of calories in weight training as compared to cardio.
Your training plan is very famous, what all does it include?
My training package is really simplistic. My training principle is called DTP (Dramatic transformation principle). One doesn’t need much equipment in this training package. When Hrithik was shooting in Jordan’s desserts we didn’t have much equipment so we used resistant bands for DTP. But main compound exercises that I recommend in gym are usual things like dumble press, triceps extension, squats, bicep bar-bell curls, standing calves press, hanging leg raises, abs crunches etc. I like to use a lot of functional works, lot of high intensity interval training and I put bodies into position to which they aren’t used to like doing a lot of boxing, sand bag workout, TRX workout etc.
