Texting can hamper your brain Rhythm

Sending text messages on an iPad or smartphone could change the rhythm of brain waves in humans — a finding having significant implications for brain-computer interfacing, driving and gaming.

People could communicate increasingly via text messaging, but little is known about the neurological effects of a Smartphone use.

In order to find out more about how a brain work during the time of textual communication using smartphones, a team which was led by William Tatum a Mayo Clinic researcher has analyzed data from 129 patients.

Further, their brain waves were monitored for 16 months through electroencephalograms (EEGs) combined with a video footage.

Dr Tatum had found a unique ‘texting rhythm’ in almost every one in five patients who were using their smartphone for texting while having their brain waves monitored.

Dr Tatum had commented that, they believe this new rhythm is an objective metric of the brain’s ability to process all non-verbal information during the use of electronic devices and which is heavily connected to a distributed network augmented by emotion attention. However, the ‘texting rhythm’ was also found in iPad users.
