Sculpted Rhythms: Madhulika Jha & Shashi Kumar Paul
Sometimes materialistic things can tap the emotional or romantic side of a human being and that’s what the sculptures of Madhulika Jha and Shashi Kumar Paul do to you. Recently they had their exhibition at Triveni Kala Sangam, where they portrayed the best of their works and One World News had the opportunity to visit there and have a look at their beautiful art work.
As apparent as it seems, the sculptures were easy to understand and to cherish. Speaking on her style of sculpting, Madhulika Jha said, “I mostly sculpt on the theme of women and also, inwardly focus on the beauty present in every human being, especially women, from within and out. I want to propagate the positivity and that’s what I do with my work. Ever since I was child, I would admire and would respond to beauty. And I feel there is a mystery in women which attracts me. I love to explore and portray various sides of a life through my work. The concept of childhood and women (from old times to contemporary times) makes me happy.”
While speaking about the time Ms.Madhulika takes to get the finished piece, she said “Sometimes the main structure comes within two days and sometimes it can take more than a week. However, the work that I do at home finishes up quickly whereas in other places due to various sort of disturbances and limitations, the work takes more time to take its shape.”
Sculpting since January 1997, Madhulika Jha was involved in painting before sculpting started attracting her as an art. “Three dimensional art really drives me. I don’t do painting anymore until and unless someone wants me to make it. However, painting doesn’t attract me as much as sculpting does. In the beginning, it was very difficult to handle the clay but then I slowly learnt and developed a language/style of my own. So, once you see my work you would be able to recognize them.”
On one hand if her work has been prominently displaying women, then it also has books in them as she is an avid reader. On the same occasion we also spoke to Shashi Kumar Paul who told us about his journey so far, “I have been doing this work since I was born. My parents didn’t want me to get into this because they had a bad experience in this field but then I wanted to make a career in it and my experience has been good so far.”
His work is slightly inspired by core-wellness and he likes to experiment with his work to keep it different from the lot. Like one of his works displayed the chakras in a human body and had lights in them. He gets fascinated about themes like romance and childhood and that’s what many of the art works talk about. Through his work, he also tries to show the disparity between the childhood we had and the childhood that the contemporary era children are living.
Each of their sculptors had intricate work and what speaks much more about them is their simplicity. If you somehow missed it, then make sure to make a visit the next time they display their art work, either together or separately.
