Plus size comes of age

Plus size clothing trend is slowly catching up. At present the share of plus size clothing is only 2 percent all over the world, though it varies from country to country. For example in USA the market share is only 2 percent and in UK it is 4 percent. As far is Indian market is concerned, there are no statistic to show. As Ritu Beri puts it “Plus Size clothing is not picking up in India, though we have designers who churn out outfits for “pregnant women” in the form of gowns, evening dresses and suits”.

According to a study, women whose size are 14 and more usually prefer custom made clothes which suit their body. Women like actress Melissa McCarthy, who size is 14 plus are planning to launch their own label. She laments “whenever I visit for suitable outfits like a gown or party wear for my size rarely I get clothes that suit my body. Sad our big brands and designers are not taking the pain in producing plus size clothing. But I do hope in future they have to do it because more and more women and even men are looking for plus size clothing which suits their body,”.

On the other hand, owner of Re/Dress, plus size modern vintage clothing store Rachel Kacenjar says that when she was young it was difficult to get suitable clothing for plus size. “In our store we provide variety including dresses, pants, gowns to plus size women of all ages. No doubt it is a small beginning. Hope it will succeed.”

World wise designer Jasmine elder of Jibri is the real game changer for plus size women, as she did a lot of research and a good understanding of what plus size women are looking for.

Eloquii and ASOS Curve are the two major brands with quality and affordable clothing for plus size women. While Eloquii is coming out with quality Work Wear, the other one is famous for affordable street wear.

“We Indian designers are not sure yet how the market behaves if we design exclusive outfits for plus size women. Nobody is willing to take risk as the market is very tight,” says J J Valaya.

The onslaught on social media is forcing more and more brands/designers to come out with clothing for plus size women. “I hope future is bright for plus size exclusive clothing,” feels Niket Mishra designer.
