Oscars 2014

The most coveted gold trophy on the planet, Oscars was presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) which honoured the actors, technical achievements, and films of 2013 took place on March 2, 2014, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. The nominees for the same were announced on January 16, 2014 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills, California. The event was hosted by Ellen De Generes.


Steve Mc Queen’s ’12 years a slave’, which was based on a true story won three Oscars- best supporting actress for Lupita Nyong’o, best adapted screenplay and the night’s top honour-the best picture! This is the first time a black director’s film has taken the top Oscar.


‘Dallas Buyers Club’ also triumphed, winning two Oscars, including best actor and best supporting actor for Matthew Conaughey and Jared Leto respectively.


‘Gravity’ also proved to be a big winner by stealing seven academy awards for best director (Alfonso Cuaron), Best sound mixing, Best score, Cinematography, Visual effects, Film editing, and Production design.

As expected, Cate Blanchett won best actress for her role in ‘Blue Jasmine’.


The ‘Great Gatsby’ which wasn’t shortlisted for the best film, won two Oscars while ‘Frozen’ scored the best animated feature award and ‘Let It Go’ for best original song. ‘Her’ meanwhile won best original screenplay.


Other Awards include:

Best Costume design to Catherine Martin (The Great Gatsby)
Best Make-up and Hair Styling to Adruitha Lee & Robbins Mathews (Dallas Buyres Club)
Best animated short film: Mr. Hublot
Best Live action short: Helium
Best Documentary short: The Lady in Number 6
Best Documentary feature: 20 feet stardom.
Best Foreign language film: The Great Beauty.


Besides, there were few movies which had several nominations on them but went empty-handed with no Oscars like ‘American Hustle’ which had top ten nominations. Others included ‘Wolf of Wall street’ with five nominations, ‘Nebraska’ and ‘Captain Phillips’ with six each and ‘Philomena’ with four.
