Nokia Name Axed: Microsoft Lumia Unveiled
With Microsoft taking over Nokia, an era of mobile technology comes to an end. We all have a Nokia story to tell. Perhaps it was the first phone you ever owned. Perhaps it was the sturdiest phone you ever saw. It was your “go-to” phone when your smartphone broke down. And perhaps, it was the only phone you could afford with your first salary and hence remains the closest to your heart. Whatever, maybe your story, Nokia evokes a strong sense of nostalgia as it was the first mobile phone of our generation.

However, in the latest takeover by Microsoft the news is that in the Nokia Lumia range of phones, the name Nokia will be struck off and the phones would either be called Microsoft Lumia or simply Lumia. Although the fact remains obscure if this is going to influence existing phones or just the new releases, but from the latest post on the Facebook page of Nokia which says, “We are on the verge of becoming Microsoft Lumia!” and from the confirmation given by Nokia France, we can be fairly certain that the Nokia Lumia will not be known by the same name.
Microsoft takes over Nokia.
Microsoft bought Nokia’s phone business in April this year in a $7.2 billion deal and since then speculations have sprung regarding the “death” of Nokia.
In an attempt to quell these rumors, Barry French, the Executive Vice-President, Marketing and Corporate Affairs, wrote a blog post on 11th September, 2014, where he said that. “Some of today’s press reports related to rumors about Microsoft dropping the Nokia brand have declared the death of the Nokia brand. But to paraphrase Mark Twain ‘reports of our death are an exaggeration’. Yes, we have sold our mobile phones business to Microsoft. But the Nokia of today is financially robust and has moved from weakness to strength.”

He further adds, “We have one of the world’s best telecom infrastructure businesses, a global leader in the mapping and location business, a stellar intellectual property portfolio and some of the finest innovation capabilities of any company anywhere. Remember, Nokia started almost 150 years ago with just one paper mill. Over time we have repeatedly and successfully reinvented ourselves. We may not be the same Nokia of several years ago, but we are here, we are strong, and our brand is very much still alive. Not to mention kicking!”
Such a spirited account of the company’s present status seems like a positive change for brand Nokia. Perhaps this is a chance for them to reinvent themselves after being in the phone business for nearly three decades.
Reportedly, the Finnish firm Nokia, remains a separate company.
