Museum inside the Gurudwara
Museum inside the Gurudwara Shri Guru Bangla Shaib
The famous Bangla Sahib Gurudwara in the heart of Delhi has come up with a multimedia museum which highlights the key tenets of Sikhism using paintings, multi-language sound, screens and projections. The museum was inaugurated by the Union Minister of Finance and Defence, Arun Jaitley in the presence of Harsimrat Kaur Badal- the Union Minister of Food and Processing on 26th July 2014 amidst hundreds of devotees.
The museum has been named ‘Baba Baghel Singh Sikh Heritage Multimedia Museum’ which is dedicated to the Sangat by the Padma Shri awardee and the Chairman of Sun Foundation, Vikramjit Singh Sahney. He has built this museum in memory of his beloved father-Late Sardar Gurucharan Singh Sahny in collaboration with the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee.
Arun Jaitley on this auspicious event said, “The management committee has selected a historical date to inaugurate this museum as today India is observing Kargil Diwas to pay homage to the martyrs (The crowd cheered “Jo bole so nihaal…”). As you know, a museum indicates history and culture of any particular place or era which cannot be known in spite of staying at that place for years. And, preserving history is also an art which is not everyone’s cup of tea.”
He further congratulated and thanked Vikramjit Singh for this initiative. He also appreciated the idea of using light-visual effects for explaining history at the Akshardham temple, Noida.
“Earlier people learnt history only through books but now, they can also watch various channels (History) to know more. As watching anything visually can affect us more than merely reading a book. So, I like the digital screening installed in the museum which shows the videos of martyrs and their sacrifices, love and patriotism for their motherland. I would like all the school children and young citizens to pay a visit to this beautiful and informative museum,” expressed Jaitley.
The museum showcases the history and culture of the Sikh religion which has been portrayed through paintings and sculptures. Digital screens have also been installed on the walls to showcase Punjabi movies like 1984, Pinjar, Gadar and documentaries which are based on a historical plot. There were paintings of Baba Baghel Singh, Guru Nanak Dev Bala, Martyrdom Guru Arjan Dev, Guru Gobind Singh, Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Baba Deep Singh on the walls. Other portraits included: Emperor Akbar having Langar; Martyrdom of Chote Sahibzadas– being bricked alive and merger of the light of one’s soul with the eternal light.
Baba Baghel Singh Multimedia Museum is opened for public from Tuesday to Sunday (Monday closed) from 9am to 7:30 pm. Entry is free for all.
Venue: In the premises of Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, Ashoka Road. The place is walking distance from Patel Chowk metro station (Exit gate-3) on the Yellow Line.
