London Metro goes Green!
Borrowing from automobile Prius’s technology, London city’s Metro is conducting a 5 week experiment in regenerating energy from braking systems.
In this experiment, whenever a metro brakes, unlike conventional brakes, which produce heat due to friction, the new system, called ‘regenerative braking’ does not produce heat, instead, using inverters, converts this energy into electricity.
So far the experiment has been successful, with the Metro generating 1 MW each day. Once fully implemented, the technology will save them a cool 6 million Pounds per year, and also help maintain the interanl enviroment better in the tunnels. A win win for the metro and it’s passengers!
