Let’s Celebrate Our Emotions, Let’s Celebrate Poetry
“Doesn’t stay afar pouting your lips at me like a rosebud, I asked you for a kiss- let your lips answer my plea.” Mirza Ghalib.
Poetry has always been a medium of expression for everyone. It is one form of art that is believed to be coming out straight from heart. For different people art is combination of various things together, and for many people poetry is in painting, in mother’s lullaby, in rock, in play, almost in everything they see.

India has seen innumerable poets, right from the moment one must have known what language is. While attending Worlds Poetry Day’s Celebration called ‘Sabad’ in Sahitya Akademi, I was wondering that all those who were present there, what poetry actually meant for them! Because for anyone among us, as I said earlier, poem has nothing to do with something called ‘correct form’ or ‘structure’, there is a poet in everyone and poetry in every life. So, in mid of a panel talk I tried to ask and understand what poetry meant for people on dais- Ingrid Storholmen (Norway), Les Wicks (Australia), Bhalchandra Nemade (India), George Szirtes (USA), Desmond Kharmawphlang (Nigeria).
What is art?
Bhalchandra Nemade(India) says that the village he grew up in, art was only of one form, which was used in different forms of expression to forget their sufferings. After 17 years of having the same background, it is only when he went for higher studies; he found art of several forms. People believed that music is greater than poetry and vice-versa and also that hearing and seeing were great senses that can promote great arts, but he never believed this. For him art was and will be only of one form. All arts go together and are combined.
“I used to live with my grandmother, and she would keep singing to me every day and it was tradition of my village. We use to perform on poems, some would sing, some would compose, some would sing and dance, but not every time they would be same person. In my tradition, all of us are integrated; they talk and sing about people. Drumming and singing was involved, we believe that you cannot separate song from poetry and vice-versa… we believe that until unless you don’t perform poem it is not completed. I became poet because of my grandmother, but what I learnt in school was completely different from what I learned with my grandmother.” said Desmond Kharmawphlang (Nigeria).

“I felt words, beauty and started learning everything about life when my grandfather would play violin. Also, going to library has been huge help and being in library has helped me to know a lot about art.” says Ingrid Storholmen (Norway).
What is poetry?
“Poetry is a play on plain paper, it act as visual art too. A poem is beautiful when it is arranged in a wonderful manner on paper so that when people look at it, an automatic picture or movie kind of thing starts playing in the mind. An emotion is not a poem there has to be a consciousness. Writing is a form of self-discovery, the more you write the more you can discover yourself, and this is where one needs to add form to It.” says Ingrid Storholmen (Norway).
I came across a student, AvikaDanda, who was pretty interested in poetry, so I asked the same question to her that what poetry means for her. On this question she said “I am quite demoralised by what has been talked here. For me, poetry has no form, it is pure emotion. As I am beginner, I would probably not want that someone tell me what word should be used where. I would just want to be either appreciated or to be told it can be better. I would want to move on from the predefined forms of poetry and define my own form.”

“Suppose I want to communicate with you, I would use proper words, short sentence and so on. So, when we would take care of all these factors we would put forward good poem. I believe that audience is the decider of what your poem is, good or bad. One should read Ghalib’s poetry to know what real poetry is about and how poetry should be written. For instance Ghalib said-
“Garmi sahi Kalaam mein,
Garmi sahi Kalaam mein
Par naisskadar,
Ki Kahi jisse baat usne shikayat zaroor ki.”
So, poetry for me is a musical way of expression, nothing can express anything in a better way than poetry.”says BhalchandraNemade (India)
The same question was asked to a poet SubashVerma, and he narrated to us a small piece of poem that he has written in his book “Open any page” that is about to be published-
Disclaimer
Music sparkles embedded in silence
Shapes arise by joining dots on white
Forms leap out from chunks of marble
Poems, by mirroring a glowing delight
Art is born by seeking deeper within
Claiming “Creation!” – may be a baneful sin
Waiting forever, for someone to discover
Man just finds them where they have been
Above said question that what poetry is and what a good poet is, was also asked to ChandrakantDevtale, a 76 years old poet, who answered “Who can define earth, life, human? The same way defining poetry is difficult. Every man should be a poet and he is, but then due to the society, responsibility and so on, he kills the poet in him. So the poets are people who haven’t killed the human inside them. I am poet since birth. I don’t differentiate between man and poetry. And for being a poetry one has to connect oneself with environment around and be human first.”
I don’t know even now what exact is meaning of poetry but all I can say is it has different meaning for different people but somewhere connects all. So, what do you feel about poetry? Write to us on info@oneworldnews.in.
