To know more about jute products I visited Dilli Haat, INA. The moment I entered the market, my eyes stopped blinking, the market was full of stalls selling various beautiful handicrafts, not everything was of jute but yes, and they were also made of natural materials in a natural way. But any way I found some stalls selling jute products. First I went to a stall, holding jute bags for various purposes such as bottle carrying bags, hand bags, etc. The stall was installed by Agrika Kalyan Samiti, an NGO working to produce jute products and some more products. The NGO works basically at Patna (Bihar), but it often participates in various exhibitions to encourage people to be attracted towards products manufactured by jute fiber. This organization gives chance to the housewives to stand on their own and earn their livelihood by manufacturing jute products and other natural products.

I saw many beautiful bags there which can be used daily but my main concern was to ask people’s response towards jute products. The stall holder told “demand for jute products has increased than before;people like to buy attractive pieces for their daily purpose works.” But the question stands here, if jute is natural and also bio-degradable then why poly bags are still in market. “The government has done so much to encourage the use of jute bags but still it has not been successful to stop use of poly bags.” she tells.

Jute is 100 % bio-degradable, recyclable and thus Environment friendly and India is the largest producer of jute. Most of its production happens in the states of Assam, Bihar and West Bengal. The needed fiber comes from the stem and ribbon of its crops and the next process is to give it some fair shape, the Retting process. In retting process its stems or ribbons are bundled and immersed in slow running water. After retting it is passed for the next process which is called Stripping process. In this process the waste are stripped off from the fibers. This process is majorly done by women and children of rural areas.

While India is the largest producer of jute but still it needs to import jute fibers from other countries. According to a 2013 report of International Jute study group, India imported approximately 162,000 tonnes of raw fiber and 175,000 tonnes of jute products in the year 2011.

Jute products are natural, eco-friendly and attractive but these are not getting that much response that it should receive, mostly in urban areas. I am waiting for the day when there will be jute bags in the hands of people instead of polythene bags.
