Is sleeping too much harmful?
Taking a proper sleep is as important as practicing regular exercises in order to stay healthy. Due to certain health diseases, many people are prone to sleeping disorders. The amount of sleep you need varies significantly over your lifetime, depending upon your age, activity level and your general fitness. For instance, during illness and stress, an adult need more amount of sleep in comparison to normal times. Experts recommend that adults should sleep for seven to nine hours every day.

Not everyone who sleeps more has a sleeping disorder but if you experience symptoms like anxiety, low energy or loss of memory, you may suffer from hypersomnia, a medical sleeping disorder. It is also known as ‘sleep drunkenness’. Person usually suffering from this feels groggy after they wake up. Hypersomanics do not feel refreshed after sleep and often wake up feeling disoriented. Moreover, it may lead to dysfunction in social setting. Below are some causes which lead one to sleep more than required:
Sleep apnea – It is a sleeping disorder that causes people to breath while sleeping due to which the normal cycle of sleep gets disturb. This ultimately makes the person feel sleepy during the day as they do not get quality rest during the night.
• Depressions – People who are depressed tends to sleep more as they are listless and do not have energy.
• Medication– A person who is under medication also feels drowsy and sleeps for longer periods than others.

“Optimal sleeping is very important as it keeps your blood pressure normal, helps in the proper functioning of brain but sleeping too much or too less may prove chronic to your health. If you are consistently sleeping more, you should consult a doctor” says Mr. Shashank Srivastava, a general physician. Talking on the effects of sleeping more, he emphasized on the following points:
• Headache– A person who is suffering from hypersomnia, often experiences severe headaches.
• Obesity – He may constantly gain weight which increases the rate of heart attack.
• Poor dietary– Sleeping more results in the loss of appetite and poor digestion.
• Blood pressure – People who sleep too much may also suffer from high blood pressure.

Sleeping disorder should be treated on time and treatments for it are available because it may become more chronic with the passage of time.
Also, it can result into early death of the patient. Here are some simple steps to avoid daytime sleepiness:
• Get an adequate sleep at night. Take a nap for at least seven to nine hours a day.
• Keep distractions out of the bed like television, videogames etc.
• Set a consistent wake up time daily.
• One should go to bed at time and follow the same routine every day.
• Take your meals on time. It regulates the body system and promotes healthy sleeping habits.
By inculcating these simple sleeping habits in daily routine, people can stay fit and healthy throughout their life.
