A collection of art photography by Bhooma Padmanabhan was organized at the Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi. Photographs shot by creative and innovative photographers Atul Bhalla, Gauri Gill, Sunil Gupta, Malini Kochpillai and Asim Waqif had been put up on display which depicted the free spirit on the streets across the national capital.
The photographers have shot these pictures keeping in mind the places which people are not very familiar with. These places are highly populated but still go unnoticed by the majority. Moreover, the artists form a part of these places and the people living there. Through these pictures the photographers are trying to put the stories of people and their relationships in front of the people who are unknown to these places.
The photographers are trying to show the ‘not so popular’ places of Delhi and the different lives in the by-lanes of the national capital. The vision of the photographer is captivating enough to leave a mark in the on-looker’s mind. With innovation in the field of photography, the artist loves to capture parts of our city that we so easily over-look.
Atul Bhalla’s ‘Kaner on Sahahdara Drain’ (2011) is a photographic series that documents the otherwise common kaner plant (botanical name Nerium Oleander) growing in the middle of the bustling Delhi roads.
Gauri Gill’s ‘Hall of Technology’ (2010) reveals the invisible chaotic worlds of migrant laborers and transient spaces around which urban dreams and models are built. Gill observes, “Pragati Maidan was created to be at the forefront of scientific progress, but now it seems almost arcane – like a Russian structure with Eisenstein’s workers housed and toiling in the dark basement or up in the AC ducts.”
Sunil Gupta’s photographs from the series ‘Mr. Malhotra’s party’(2007) includes seven portraits in public places around Delhi. The artist here uses the title as a reference to the spoil parties in Delhi bars/pubs.
Malini Kochupaillai’s ‘Africa via Khirkee’ is an ongoing series of her interaction with the African community living in the urban village of Khirkee in south Delhi.
Asim Waqif’s videos ‘An Experiment on MG Road’ (2010) and ‘Exploring Dereliction’ (2010) are both urban explorations into the interiors of dilapidated architectural spaces.
