Indian researchers show how brain responds to trauma

According to the findings of Indian Researchers, a single stressful incident can lead to increased electrical activity in a brain region known as the amygdala. It is a small, almond- shaped group of nerve cells that is located deep within the temporal lobe of the brain. Here is the study that how brain responds to trauma?

Notably, the Indian scientists have gained insights into how a single instance of severe stress can lead to long –term psychological trauma. This is a major step towards developing new therapeutic approaches to treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which is commonly known as PSTD.

Do you know a single stressful incident in life can lead to increased electrical activity in a brain region known as the amygdala? According to the study, the activity sets in late, it occurs 10 days after a single stressful episode. It is dependent on a molecule known as the N- Methyl- D-Aspartate Receptor, it is an ion channel protein on nerve cell which is crucial for the memory of a person.

Notably, the study system is applicable to PTSD. It is a mental condition that develops in a delayed fashion after a stressful or as harrowing episode.

Investigations had revealed major changes in the microscopic structure of the nerve cells of amygdale due to excessive stress.

Stress leads to the formation of new nerve connections called synapses in this region of the brain. However, the physiological effects of these new connections were unknown.

Everybody knows that amygdala is hyperactive in PSTD patients, but this study has thrown light on the exact activity that happens in the brain, when it encounters trauma.

The study also suggested the new formation of the nerves leads to increase in the electrical activity in the brain. The study is a major breakthrough to treat PSTD.
