The film ‘Haider’ is based on a sensitive issue of Kashmir. It raises certain questions as to what happens to militants who are arrested. The scenario of Srinagar in the year 1995 is showcased along with the torture the prisoners undergo.
Based on William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the Oedipus complex is clearly seen through the mother-son relationship. Besides, the movie revolves around love, cheat, murder & mystery, killing of innocents and revenge. ‘Intkaam’ is what a job becomes for Shahid as a favour to his father’s death.
Shahid Kapoor has done a great job. He has worked a lot upon his role, character and on the native language of Kashmir. Tabu, Irrfan Khan and Kay Kay Menon made the movie even more beautiful with their powerful roles.
The sweet melodies of the movie along with tracks in the regional language, gives you a glimpse of the old Kashmir and the art & culture of the state. War of Independence in the backdrop, loss of lives, losing of closed ones shows the suffering, Kashmir is still going through. The underlying theme that the film portrays is that nobody is safe in Kashmir. That is why, Tabu sends Shahid to Aligarh at the cost of her own life. As was said in the movie, Madras Café that people staying in Central (New Delhi) will have no idea of the real situation by just seeing the scenario on televisions unless and until they personally visit the place.
Few dialogues are native and in the regional language which are also supported by Shayaris and Ghazals. The film has no item songs and lacks masala. So, it would not be able to attract the commercial lot. Moreover, the movie loses its impact in between.
On the entertainment side, Shahid and Shraddha Kapoor’s love scenes are included along with funny appearance of Irrfan Khan. The movie is beautifully pictured and takes the audience for a tour in Kashmir.
Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, the film is a modern-day adaptation of Hamlet. To be screened at the 19th Busan International Film Festival, the movie released worldwide on 2nd October, 2014.
