Gujarat Gets Its First Woman CM
No sooner did the Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi resigned from the Chief Minister’s post, it was declared that Anandiben Patel would be sworn in as the new CM of Gujarat, making her the first woman Chief Minister of the state.
Anandiben Patel, whose name was proposed by Agriculture Minister of Gujarat Bhupendra Singh Chudasama and seconded by BJP general secretary Amit Shah, is an elected leader of the Bhartiya Janata Party. Holding Gujarat’s Revenue Ministry, she is considered to be a close aide of Modi.
The 73 years old Patel was elected unanimously and is set to take oath on Thursday, the 22nd of May, 2014. She acknowledged Modi for giving this responsibility and for showing trust in her.Narendra Modi, who is among the most active public figures on social media, wasted no time in tweeting on how happy he was for leaving Gujarat in safe hands.
On this auspicious occasion the lady, with a choked voice, spoke about her struggles to reach where she has and how important a support the former CM has been to her. She went onto highlight the difficulties women face in politics and credited the guidance of politicians like former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L.K Advani, who managed to change the scenario to a large extent.
What is to be noted is that soon she will be joining the list of presiding women Chief Minister’s of India, which includes Vasundhara Raje of Rajasthan, Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal and J.Jayalalitha of Tamil Nadu. If reports are to be believed Kiran Bedi is also set to contest for the post of Chief Minister of Delhi, representing the BJP. These turn of events are certainly going to allow women to make their presence felt in Indian politics.
