Out of the five sense organs that we have, eyes are considered the most precious. Today’s stressful life takes a toll on our health the most. Our eyes are effected very badly in the process as well. Eyesight dimming is not anymore, the cause of aging. In fact, it is the food we consume that determines our health includes the eyesight. Dry eyes, cataracts and macular degeneration are some common eye problems. Let us now have a look at few of the foods which helps to improve eyesight:
- Carrots
Elders have always recommended carrots and other red/orange colored fruits for better eyesight. The reason behind it is because they are rich in beta-carotene which is a type of Vitamin A. Consuming these food articles helps in smooth functioning of eyes.
- Fish
Omega-3 fatty acids present in fish helps in the maintenance of vision. Regular consumption of fatty fishes like salmon, sardines etc once or twice a week is also said to reduce the risk of macular degeneration.
- Nuts
A research shows that Almonds, walnuts, pistachios are rich in Vitamin E which slows the process of macular degeneration in the senior citizens. Omega-3 fatty acids present in the nuts improves your eye health.
- Green Leafy Veggies
Leafy vegetables like spinach, Collard green and kale are rich in plant pigments such as lutein and zeaxanthin which helps in the development of cataracts and macular degeneration. Green vegetables like Broccoli, avocados and peas are also good source to improve eye sight.
- Legumes
Kidney beans, lentils, black-eyes peas are rich in bioflavonoids and zinc fibers which lowers the risk of cataract and macular degeneration. They are very well known to protect the retina of the eyes.
- Eggs
Eggs are rich in Vitamin A and lutein which protects our eyes from night blindness and improve eyesight. This protein packed food is recommended to be consumed in the beginning of the day.
