Feel the love with Humpty & Kavya

Take a bowl and pour some oil in it and let it warm. After it does, add some onions and red chilies to it. Stir well till the onions go brown and once ready add some honey and salt to it. Blend it well before adding your veggies to it. We don’t know if all these steps make any sense to you or excite you to taste it but Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya will as it is a blend of romance, emotions, masala, fights etc. without which any romantic film is incomplete, at least in India.

Inspired by DDLJ, the bench-mark for romance till date, which is even now successfully running in its 1000th week at the Maratha Mandir (Mumbai), HSKD manages to keep the audiences glued to their seats enjoying the oh-so-sweet chemistry shared by Humpty (Varun Dhawan) and Kavya (Alia Bhatt).

This Karan Johar’s flick is yet another endeavor to match up to the Raj-Simran story which has led every Indian to get lost in the dream of his ‘Senorita’ and her ‘Prince Charming’. While both the lead characters of the movie, Alia and Varun, boasted about their chemistry on and off the screen, their connection was indeed inevitable.

Humpty, a regular Delhi guy is the lone heir to his father’s bookstore. He is a big time flirt but is good at heart. For him passing by any means is important, but cheating is not on that list of ‘any means’ because that’s against his father’s principles. Most importantly, he is so influenced by DDLJ that he breathes-speaks -feels like the character of Raj. Also, the movie has many sequences where either the dialogue or the scene has been enacted similar to that of the DDLJ, with a pinch of modernity in them.

Kavya from Ambala is scheduled to get married in the coming two months, besides being a die-hard Kareena Kapoor fan. She only wishes to get married wearing a designer lehenga which her family disapproves of and hence, she flees to Delhi and meets Humpty. Ashutosh Rana who plays the father of Kavya, is man against the concept of love-marriages as his elder daughter suffered the consciousness of getting in one.

The connection between Humpty and Kavya grows strong as the movie proceeds, leading Humpty to make ‘Humpty’ promise (which he never breaks) to buy her a lehenga and eventually, Kavya also falls for him. Now comes in the DDLJ twist with Kavya’s date of marriage nearing and Humpty trying to win over her father. Humpty does enter the wedding house but unlike DDLJ, Kavya’s father gives him a chance to state at least one reason of why Siddharth Shukla, the television heart-throb making his debut as Angad, is not fit for her. So, the later part of the movie revolves around how Humpty struggles to prove Kavya’s father that he is the best match for her. The sequence where Humpty tries to prove Angad gay is extremely funny and well enacted.

The movie has very convincing dialogues and the plot is very realistic. Varun Dhawan has certainly proved that he can act and would not just be called a ‘Dancer’. This is probably his best performance till date and now we expect him to do much better. Alia has also done a good job completely justifying her tattoo ‘Pataka’. Siddarth Shukla can act and he proves it well in a supporting role. The music is extremely groovy and choreography simply amazing. The comic timing of all the actors is good, making it a fun film to catch with the family.

It seems like debutant Director Shashank Khaitan’s hardwork has shown it’s colour in a blissful way. He has the potential and we expect him to come up with new and fresh concepts. Over all the movie is a breathable experience, a must watch for couples. So, OWN would say ‘Go! Laugh, groove, cry with Humpty and Kavya’.

OWN ratings: 3.5/5.
