Drive Safe in Monsoons

While we enjoy winters somewhere we also eagerly wait for summers. Post the early summers we desperately wait for the monsoons to bring us relief from the wrath of sun god. Pre-monsoon showers are already here and few would have already experienced it. Soon the water logged streets, traffic jams and drivers staring at their car’s engine on the side of the streets would be a common sight. We want you to enjoy the drive during rains and not be that driver parked by side of the road calling friends or mechanics for rescue. These few tips would at least get you home fast and safe.

Tyres are the only part of your car that should touch the road and get you from point A to B in your car. They help you in accelerating and braking the car to stop in time to avoid unnecessary hassle. It is important to ensure they are in good shape and have enough tread depth about 3-5mm. One can check this putting a one rupee coin to see if half of it goes into the treads. The tyres also do the most important job i.e. to maintain traction with surface of the road while there may be water, mud, slush or anything else. So make sure you maintain the right air pressure, tread depth and the tyre walls are not swollen.

The brakes come-in next that should be kept a check on. Make sure you do not hear any sounds coming from the tyres whenever you are trying to slow down or bring the car to a halt. It would be a good idea to get a mechanic to check them and use a sandpaper to clean the brake pads and the brake drum (in case you do not have disc brakes).

Low visibility is often the case when it rains. A good pair of headlights in front helps you to see the clearly what’s next and at the rear, the tail lights make the person driving behind of your existence. You can always choose to add fog lights for better visibility. Make sure the bulbs are working for headlights, tail lights and the indicators (remember nobody throws a hand out any more to signal that they are about to make a turn)

Windscreen wipers aid to your visibility. Make sure you have checked the wiper blades. Run your forefinger from top to bottom of the rubber blade to see an even line without any cuts, if required, replace them. The cost of changing wiper blades is far lower than the time taken to get home in the evening due to low visibility. The new generation cars are equipped with front and rear defoggers, use them. They are there for a reason. The water bottle for wipers should be topped up every weekend and add a little bit of your liquid dish washer for a clean windscreen. Pril or anything else would work just fine as far as you only add few drops.
