Dentistry is Not Expensive…..Neglect is!
“Some tortures are physical And some are mental,But, the one that is both is dental.”
Bad-breath, cavity, yellow teeth, broken teeth, crooked teeth, no teeth, etc., is what they get to see all day, and yet end up being the ‘VAMPIRE’, one never wishes to encounter.
The fear of visiting a Dentist is similar to that of going to a butcher, but one must not avoid it either. So, One World News asked a few questions on Dental Care to Dr. Kanika Maheshwari.
How effective are tooth-pastes?
Many studies which have been done on the sensitivity tooth pastes and whitening tooth pastes have shown that it really decreases the sensitivity and whitens the teeth respectively. Hence, I do believe that they work.
Is sensitivity toothpaste effective?
Yes, they are. The ingredients of the sensitivity tooth pastes like potassium nitrate or strontium chloride helps to reduce tooth sensitivity.
How one can retain whiteness of their teeth?
Whiteness of the teeth can be retained by brushing the teeth with light pressure so that it will preserve the outer most layer of the teeth, the enamel. One can also use tooth whitening toothpastes to whiten their teeth, but they must not be used routinely as it contains abrasives, which may harm the teeth enamel.
What kind of brushes should be used?
We prescribe our patients to use either soft or extra soft tooth brushes, to avoid harm to the enamel of the teeth.
Some people have black spots between their teeth, how can they be removed?
One must consult a dentist for the black spots, because it can either be cavity, which needs to be excavated, or they might just be stains which can be removed by cleansing.
How many times in a year, is teeth cleansing advisable? Why?
Ideally, teeth cleansing should be done after every six months, but one should consult their dentist after every three months because of the normal phenomenon of the deposition of plaque, a sticky deposit on the teeth in which bacteria proliferates. The hardened dental plaque forms tartar or the calculus.
Tartar is caused by the continual accumulation of minerals from the saliva on the plaque, on the teeth. Tartar can only be removed by a dental professional, who can avoid the tartar build-up by removing the deposited plaque. To help prevent tartar, ensure to brush your teeth at least twice a day, preferably with a tartar-control fluoride toothpaste.
What would you say about using a mouth-wash?
Mouthwashes should only be used under the consultation of a dentist, as it has many side effects, for example, staining of the teeth.
How do eating habits affect the teeth?
Sticky and sweetened foods play the primary role in the formation of the cavity in your teeth. If the food sticks onto the teeth for a longer period of time it will start forming cavity. So to prevent cavity formation, one should make it a daily practise to rinse with water after every meal.
What sorts of diseases can one face due to a decayed tooth?
One can witness many diseases due to a decayed tooth, caries and pulpal infections are the ones most commonly faced.
What causes a bad breath? How can it be treated?
There is no specific reason for bad breath. Excessive plaque accumulation or cavity formation in the teeth, are some of the most common reasons for this. There can be various other reasons to it as well.
Any food item which is advisable for healthy teeth?
It is always advisable to have non-sticky and non-sweetened foods for strong & healthy teeth.
