‘How do Mad Artists Think’ workshop@ The Piano Man

How do Mad Artists Think?

One look at this title and curiosities are sparked off as to what a workshop such as this would have to offer. We have great art galleries in our city and almost daily there are exhibitions held there. Yet only a particular section of the city crowd populate these hubs. Perhaps because most people feel intimidated by the aura around art which demands an appreciation that can come only by the experts in the field, they prefer to stay out of the zone.

However, at the workshop we attended hosted by Viraj Rohan Circar subverted the notions about art that people have been holding onto for so long and maintaining their distance from it. Held on the side of a huge sprawling golf course, at the Piano Man, Palam Vihar amidst slow jazz and cool air blowing around, the workshop seemed artistically placed as well. The passion for the workshop was clearly evident on the face of Viraj Rohan Circar, who even after conducting quite a few sessions of this workshop previously still seems full of excitement about it. His partner in the organization of this workshop Nayantara Devaya, a lawyer by profession and an art enthusiast at heart, was equally animated about the workshop. Conceptualized about 6 months ago, Viraj and Nayantara, endeavor to make these workshops as interactive and informative as possible, making them fun all the way long.

The choice for the locations they hold for their workshops are based on their experiences of the places, and the present place, “The Piano Man seemed like a good place. Also, because when we speak with the people who own these places, sometimes there is an instant connect based on mutual appreciation of the forms of art. Arjun Gupta, the owner of The Piano Man, himself a jazz musician was as enthusiastic as us for this and the last bit of the workshop would be conducted by him when he would introduce jazz to us” said Nayantara.

The workshop was a fun mix of facts and fun, where Viraj showing us the works of renowned artists took us on a journey through the history of art. The various art forms told their own story of the time and lives of the artists who created them. An appreciation for the dynamic between culture and art was developed through the workshop.

Understanding the elements of art

Questions like what art is? What is modern art? Is talent an essential element for one to be a good artist? How does the artist’s emotional life reflect itself in his works? Where does an artist draw his inspiration from?

All these and many such questions would be answered in this workshop which Viraj and Nayantara plan to continue. This workshop is essential to all those who want to increase their knowledge base about the different forms of art.

As Viraj puts it, “Understanding the imagery around us is essential to have an aesthetic experience of life and you are the most alive when you have an aesthetic experience.”
