The 2014 Commonwealth Games kicked off quite in style on the 24th of July, in the beautiful city of Glasgow. The opening ceremony on the previous night, included scintillating performances by singer John Barrowman, dancers clad in tartan shirts and the giant inflatable Loch Ness Monster among many. On Day one of the twentieth edition, there were world-class sporting events to look forward to, and with 20 medals to be won it promised to be exiting for every adrenaline junkie.

India kick-started with a bang on the commencing day of fourth-largest sporting event in the world, lifters, Sukhen Dey (56 kg) and K Sanjita Chanu (48 kg) stole the limelight by clinching a gold medal each in the weight-lifting competition.


Moreover, Judokas’ Shushila Likmabam (48 kg) and Navjot Chana (60 kg) won a silver medal each. Another judoka, Kalpana Thoudam however, had to be content with a bronze level in the 52-kg women’s category.

S. Mirabai Chanu (75 kg) from Punjab and Ganesh Mali also bagged a silver and bronze, respectively, in the weight-lifting category. The shuttlers, squash players and paddlers had an easy contest on Day one.


India’s Anaka Alankamony, Harinder Pal Sandhu and Mahesh Mangaonkar won their respective opening singles in squash, showing promise for the matches to come.

Cyclists, Deborah and Mahitha Mohan finished 10th and 11th respectively, and adding to the agony, K Vargheese finished 13th.


Going by the results, Day one was good for the Indians with a total of seven medals in their kitty. The lifters and judokas definitely waved the flag high in the Cycle auditorium. Day two of 2014 edition will have 22 Gold medals to be won with the Boxing and Shooting competitions also beginning.
