About the new plant
“The plant in Mexico is precisely an example of the Audi Smart Factory. It is the first facility that we have put into operation completely virtually, that is, in a computer simulation,” said Audi’s Board of Management Member for Production Walt. We have tried to optimize the entire process chain and put the plant into an operation that is 30 percent faster than it’s usual.”
That was marked as a record in the automobile industry. Audi has applied the state-of-art technology in the factory planning. The plant initially took shape in a great detail in the virtual space, where the factory planners from different sites were able to work on the plant structure simultaneously. As a result, Audi was able to set up its complete car plant with a press shop, body shop, a paint shop and an assembly line on an area of 400 hectares (988acres) in the record time of merely three and a half years. Ultramodern plant equipment and a highly efficient logistics allow an annual production volume of around 150,000 Audi Q5 vehicles.
Thanks to the various water treatment methods and the application of the new technologies in the paint shop, the plant will be completely free of wastewater. New equipments will significantly help in reducing water, gas and electricity consumption facilitate the resource-efficient production.
Adjacent to the park a supplier’s park has been established. Around seven suppliers and logistics providers have currently started operations there in time for the start of production of Audi Q5. The JIS park namely ‘just in sequence’ guarantees a short distance from suppliers’ buildings to the assembly line and allows a punctual delivery of all components for the premium SUV.
At the initial stage of production, Audi is sourcing more than 70 percent of the parts from the NAFTA region and is planning to increase this proportion of localization over the long term. More than 100 companies have already supplied parts for the Audi Q5 from their sites in Mexico.
