Not everyone grows up wanting to become a Doctor who also perfects the art of Bharatnatyam. Rubaina Gambhir, whose bare feet are firmly planted in the Classical dance world, is a case in point.

The daughter of a business man, Mr. Sandeep Gambhir, and a homemaker and researcher in education, Mrs. Jasmine Gambhir has really come a long way.

 

She began dancing at the tender age of 5. She cajoled her parents to not only learn but study the dance as well. When she started learning Bharatnatyam, it was just for fun like any other child but soon it became her passion and little did her parents or even she herself know,that she would end up learning the art form for several years.

She finds happiness through dance as she finds solace while doing so. She not only found her happiness but passion as well which helped her grow and brought stability to her. Dance is not just an art for her but is a pivotal part of her.

She has been learning the form of art under the expert guidance of Guru Shmt. Usha Rao. Shmt Usha Rao has been actively involved in the art of Bharatanatyam ever since her childhood. She started learning dance at the age of 7 years under Pandanallur Doyan Chinnaya Pillai. In 1982, Guru UshaRao started her own dance academy NITYAABHINAYA. A number of Guru Usha Rao’s students are dance teachers in various countries around the world. She even conducts her dance workshops in many dance schools every year in USA.For the excellence in Bharatnatyam she was bestowed with the National award in the year 2006 and 2014.

Rubaina is 14 today and said that learning and studying Bharatanatyam has finally paid off. Today, she holds a senior diploma certificate in Bharatanatyam from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad. She has worked really hard to reach here. She has been winning academic achievement awards since years and loves dancing as she has done a number of group performances in schools. Her parents said, “We applaud her balancing act between co-curricular activities and studies; she even explored her interests when she learned painting, calligraphy, Jazz under Ashley Lobo, even attended NSD theatre summer workshop and while doing all these activities, she has not missed a day of school in years”.

2015 is a milestone year for her as she is going to her Arangetram on 10th January, 2015 at Triveni Auditorium, Tansen Marg, New Delhi. She would be performing Pushpanjali, Alarippu, Jathiswaram, Varnam, Padams, Tillana. She has been practicing day in and day out for the last six months for this show. To inaugurate the dancer’s journey the ceremonial Ghungroo Pooja was also done at a temple. Musicians came all the way from Chennai.The Chief Guest of the evening was Mrs. Nupur Kundu, a Visual Artist.

 

Apart from giving life to dance, she also aspires to become a doctor.
