An Ode To Tagore
“Every child comes with the message that God is not yet discouraged of man”- Rabindranath Tagore.
Keeping the above quote in mind, India Habitat Centre organized a session on Rabindranath Tagore for children. The aim of the session is to get the children aware of the works and the personality of the great man. Rabindranath Tagore was born on 7th May 1861. Known profoundly for his Noble winning work Geetanjali, he wrote his first book at the age of 16. He introduced new prose and verse forms and the use of colloquial language into Bengali literature, thereby freeing it from traditional models based on classical Sanskrit. He was awarded ‘Knighthood’, a British meritorious honor, which he later gave up for India’s Independence.
Rabindranath Tagore work
Sanjula Sharma has been given the noble responsibility of doing the same and she did a great job in doing so. The children were thrilled by the depth of the work of the Noble Laureate. It was heartening to see children taking a dive in the great depth of literary knowledge. Some of them even confessed that they too, write and would like to write more after the session.
Sanjula Sharma with the session
Sanjula Sharma is a freelance journalist. The session is a monthly, free for all, affair.
The session ended with recitation of the one of Tagore’s work.
Children recited the works of Tagore
Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up; into fragments
by narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason; has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action-
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.
