An evening with Chugge Khan
An evening with Chugge Khan
“Aaj rang hai he maa
Rang hai ree,
Dama dum mast kalandar”
Coke Studio on Saturday night, July 26th greeted the celebrated Chugge Khan and his band of Manganiyar musicians at Kingdom of Dreams, Gurgaon. The magic of Sufi music rendered in true Rajasthani folk style brought the hypnotic music of the desert state alive at the famous live entertainment destination.
The nomadic tribe of entertainers of ‘Rajasthan Josh’ also spun a web of magic with their ageless Sufi numbers. The ace musical maestro Chugge Khan’s powerful voice tapping with the tunes of Dhol, Tabla, Harmonium, Manjira and Castanets soared high in tradition of Manganiyar musicians.
Chugge Khan is the leader and Director of ‘Rajasthan Josh’, a collective band of musicians who play Sufi Qawwali, traditional Rajasthani folk and Manganiyar songs, poems by Kabir, Baba Bulleh Shah and other contemporary compositions. The Manganiyar musicians have wandered since time immemorial across the deserts of Rajasthan, regaling royalty as well as the commoner with stories of Rajput valour and devotional Sufi songs, celebrating life and festivals.
Chugge Khan and his band enthralled the audience with their earthy music and resonant voices. The magic of the evening was further heightened by the gypsy dancer who kept up with the rhythmic sounds with her exquisite moves in her colourful gypsy attire. It was a magical and mystical evening for the audience at KOD!
